The Fortress-Garden of Dhanû

Honor, glory, or greed. Nothing makes a warrior fight harder than the threat of an empty belly.

Nestled along a stretch of the black river that cut across the Sheoin Region, the cliff-side crops of the Garden is a rare oasis in the barren lands. The water of the Writhing Dragon flows slowly here, and a thick sludge accumulates along the bottom. As the river swells and shrinks, the sludge coat the stone in a phlegmy film. Blind shrimp and crawling parasites feed on the silt and are in turn devoured by fish, crabs, and crawling horrors. Colonies of barnacle-like creatures scar the stone-like tumors, not quite plant and not quite animal.
Here, more than anywhere else in Sheoin, life can be said to thrive. Should the Garden fall before the creeping corruption, Dhanû may well face extinction.

Geography

The Garden is spread unevenly across parts of the Writhing Dragon river and several of its tributaries. Centuries of work and use have changed the caverns there, the floors are worn even by foot, wheel, and pick. At their deepest, the cliffs of the river descend for over ten meters before they touch water, but most of the Garden's farms are only a couple of meters deep. This far from the cold-infested parts of Sheoin, the air is humid and cloying, saturated with spores.
Other than Dhanû itself, the Garden is one of the most heavily fortified places in all of Sheoin and perhaps all of Araea.

It must not fall. It will not fall.

— Imari, Dhanû Clan-Warrior

Farmers scale the cliffs by the river to plant, harvest and hunt, while warriors keep a close eye for predators and land-warping monsters.

The Garden

Farms called "Gardens" are scattered along the river's length, carved into thin terraces or in the caverns near the cliffs. The sludge from the river is fecund beyond any other soil in Dhanû. It is dredged from the river and heaped into carefully monitored pits used as both soil and fertilizer. In these, crops are grown and harvested. These range from mushroom and fungi to the occasional Cave-Capped Hatter. Any given farm here belongs to one of the many clans of Dhanû, and competition for the best space can be fierce and lethal. Closer to the river is better, and those far away are forced to scratch sustenance from little better than stone.

The in the terraced cliff-sides, kelp-like reed and bulbous, hard-shell plants-things grow in thin niches. Others host small pits, where rotting food is left to attract insects and parasites to be collected later. The lower parts of the cliff are crawling with a living shroud of sightless isopods or insects, many of whom are venomous or parasitic. The farms and collection points here are much more valuable and much more dangerous to harvest.

The Fortress

Boredom, followed by much more excitement than you'd like.

— Imari, Dhanû Clan-Warrior

Past the gardens and across the tunnels and caverns that lead to them, the Fortress holds vigil. Rather than one continuous structure, it is a hopelessly complex series of choke points, walls, and trapped tunnels that guard the way to the river and its farms. Stone walls have closed caverns and well-manned barricades. The warriors of Dhanû possess expertise in siege warfare not often credited to them, honed on the bloody battles along the Fortress.

The Fortress is often attacked. Beasts such as Suryō prowl the caverns just beyond and pick off those who wander. Blizzard-Spawn throw themselves against the fortifications to extinguish the flames behind them.
Being stationed at the Fortress is a great honor, but one that few are eager to earn.

Despite the effort, Sheoin is too vast for every tunnel and passage to be known and guarded. Quakes open new paths every few years and collapse others. Warriors stay close to the farms either in the open or in shallow pits covered by hides that serve as barracks. Ever so often, something slips into the Gardens through paths unknown and brings the fight to them.

Blood and Harvest

Be a farmer for a day. Then return and speak of glory.

The Gardens are a teeming hive of activity. Farmers tend their crops above the waters or scale the cliffs to cut polyps from the stone. Fishers spear fish, eel, and Nebiri-Shi in the black waters. It is dangerous and hard work, with perils both seen and hidden. Accidents are common - a slip and a climber can fall from the cliff and into the water. Other times, something in the water will wreck boats and drag sailors into the sludge to be devoured.
It is mostly the poor who do the most dangerous jobs. A noble would never be seen scaling the walls to hunt for food, and warriors balk at menial labor. Wealthier commons stay at the top and let others brave the Dragon for the ever-important sludge. Those who die are decapitated and their heads preserved for the Shikei, then the bodies are fed to the soil.

Hunting is one thing that the nobles and warriors will deign to do, often setting out into the wild caves beyond the Fortress in search of prey. Meat is usually reserved for the wealthy, and even in good times, the poor have to live on boiled polyp-shell broth.
Beyond that, foraging is a way of life. Large parts of the river are still unmapped and untamed, with wild plants and creatures that can be harvested. Others trespass into the domain of the more fortunate to scavenge around the farms. Such crimes are punished harshly, though some warriors argue that being forced to work along the Garden cliffs is harsh enough already.
Sheoin Region   Dhanû and its garden lie within the cold and barren Sheoin region. Here, the land is at war with itself as competing eco-systems warp and mutate the very stone in their battle for supremacy. Humanity cling to enclaves and few are as important as the Garden.   Read More About Sheoin Region

Creeping Cold

Sheoin is home to a hive of living ice and crawling parasites. These strange beings radiate cold and frost, turning the land around them inhospitable to anything else. Many creatures in Sheoin have adapted and feed off the cold, while others fight the parasitic hive-minds to keep the land free from their ever-tightening grip.     These Creeping Clusters almost resemble blooming mushrooms of ice, with eyes, limbs, and sections of bone-white carapace stretched across. Should they reach the Garden, the cold would strangle all life out of it.   Read More About Creeping Clusters
Dhanû   One of the great city-states of the Inner Shell, the people of Dhanû has endured since time immemorial. Their struggles have made them a hard, tough folk that see battle as an inevitability of survival. Revel when you can, they say, because you might be dead tomorrow.   Read More About Dhanû

Cliff Polyps

One of the most common crop to harvest along the slick cliffs of the Gardens are the Dragon Tooth Polyp. These bulbous plants are encased in a hard, elongated shell that opens only to feed or attack any who stray too close. The Polyps aren't quite plants and not quite animal, with fang-lined tendrils and roots that dig into the cliff.   Read More About Dragon Tooth Polyp

The Road

The main path that connects Dhanû to the Fortress-Garden is simply called "the Road" by those who travel it. While not the shortest route, it is the easiest to travel and trails a relatively even and spacious series of tunnels. It is wide enough for carts and beasts of burden to carry their loads, the same trait that lures predator to stalk along the Road.   Out of all the barriers in the Fortress, the one that guards the Road is the most extensive and most heavily guarded. The fortress walls are several feet thick, with elevator positions for archers to fire through slits and a massive gate that ensures everyone pays their toll.
Dhanû warriors who serve in the Fortress can claim great honor and prestige on their return to the city, whether they see action or not. To be wounded in defense of the Gardens is a cause for celebration, as the warrior so scarred has bragging rights that will last through her life.

Spiders!

Besides the farms, there are several ranches where spiders, grub, and other creeping crawlies are raised in captivity. Most are used for food, but creatures like snakes, lizards, or others are used for their hides or carapace.   These ranches usually feed their wards the offal from the farms, and anything that can't be eaten or reused typically find its way into the spider-warrens.

A detail that would make this place stand out in your world would be its temperature. for the most part, your world is underground and I would assume most of it sits around the 65 degrees that a cave typically does year-round.with all the fermentation and decomposition going on in this tight space it would be something like a warm cup of soup.

Jul 1, 2019 17:44

That's a good point and I'll see where I can fit that in. I think the way I rationalized it was that it mentions "cold and barren" nature of the region is it located in, and that kind of translates into this place as well.   The blossoms mentioned is *why* it is cold, though - as typically, you'd be right. At this depth, it would be a warm cup of soup (delicious fungi soup): was that information insufficient? Is there something I could add to it to make this part of the region clearer?   Thanks for commenting! :D

Even as I posted that, I realized the flaw in that logic: it's fertile in the first place because the blossom's haven't made it cold and miserable yet!   I'll definitely add something about it, so it stands out and contrasts with the rest. Either they can be cold and miserable, or soup-cup-warm and miserable. Definitely going to add something about that - thank you for pointing it out! :D

No problem I really enjoy this setting, I’m going to definitely work out a way to run a game here

Added a bit about the temperature and climate there: "This far from the cold-infested parts of Sheoin, the air is humid and cloying, often saturated with spores."

I love the concept that from the black waters and sludge gardens can grow and thrive, and go as far as the cliffs that surround the river. I think you did a great job describing this place!

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

A very interesting concept. I really liked the addition of quotes to stress the importance of the survival of this garden for these people. I was not clear on whether those that defend the garden are the same as those who farm it? Or are there warriors posted at the garden exclusively and the farmers do their own thing?   I really liked the amount of detail present, although one thing I missed was: why is this area particularly fertile, as opposed to the barren region around it? Is it the river or something else that gives it the fertility?   Finally, I'm not sure if this is because it's a WIP, but I personally was not fond of repeating the same image 6 times throughout the article.

I will attempt to answer your questions with quotes from the article, to see if that answers them correctly.   " Or are there warriors posted at the garden exclusively and the farmers do their own thing? "

It is mostly the poor who do the most dangerous jobs. A noble would never be seen scaling the walls to hunt for food and warriors balk at menial labor. Wealthier commons stay at the top and let others brave the Dragon for the ever-important sludge.
  Why there are farms here:
The fertile sludge is dredged from the river and heaped into carefully monitored pits, where crops are grown and harvested.
Does that answer your questions? If so; why didn't they on your first read, you think?   And yes, the pictures are WIP: that's why it says "Placeholder Bug" :D   His name is Pete. Pete the Placeholder Bug.

Well, not quite. At least not since I have very little background for your world. Are warriors considered nobles? And why is the sludge not used elsewhere to create new gardens?

Jul 4, 2019 08:24

Logistics. Carting tons of sludge through mazes of tunnels and caverns, then maintaining it, would be an impossible nightmare.

Very scary place here! But with enough life in it that humans will find a way to make it there. Good read!

So while reading through this, a number of things came to mind:   About the Writhing Dragon River - There's mention of thick sludge; Where does this sludge come from? What's it made of? I didn't see a link to an article describing the river.   I'm slightly confused about if the Garden is a natural formation, a man-made structure, or both.   Is the Garden and Fortress completely underground, or is it above ground? There's some references in the text that sound like both.   By the sounds of it, the River is probably not a viable source of safe, clean water - If so, what is the primary source of water for this area?   In the last section, the sludge is referenced as ever-important - What makes it so important?   Overall definitely an interesting sounding place, and I'm getting a 'Last bastion of humanity' vibe off of it.

Is the Garden and Fortress completely underground, or is it above ground? There's some references in the text that sound like both.
It, as most of Araea, is underground. What parts made it sound like it could be on the Surface? :D   To try an answer with a quote:
The fertile sludge is dredged from the river and heaped into carefully monitored pits, where crops are grown and harvested.
Without adding any commentary to it yet, does that answer your question of why it is important?   And the river is described in more detail in the Sheoin Region article, at the first side panel thing. :)   Thank you for reading it. I'll have to think about these things when I get around to polishing! :D

So the sludge is used as a sort of fertilizer to grow their crops then? Or it acts as the soil in general? Sorry if these questions seem pretty basic - Too many worlds to try and keep track of in my head xD   What had me confused about underground or not was the referencing to cliffs on the river that are scaled for farming - Looking back over this now I think I'm getting the idea that the river itself is underground as well, is that correct?

Jul 4, 2019 08:23

No, basic questions are good: if my article don't answer them, there's a problem I need to address. :) It's hinted at but not spelled out explicitly that the sludge kind of serves both purposes. There's some cave-soil, but even that's been grown there by putting the sludge on it.   That is correct: most of Araea is underground. The Abyss, for example, is one enormous subterranean ocean.   Thanks again :)

I'm very fond of the detail and the way that most parts of the setting interact with the environment. There's obvious texture for a story or campaign and it's clear how the culture plays into the environment and vice versa. The description of the Fortress implies that there is a larger threat than wild animals and elemental spirits, is there one or is there some other impetus for such an imposing fortification?

Jul 4, 2019 08:20

That would be the Blossoms - hive-mind things of living ice and crawling chitin that spread cold. The threat isn't so much that they will kill you (as they're mostly immobile, though their guardians are not) but that the cold they radiate will just kill your crops and make your land uninhabitable.   Also, wild beasts in Araea are a little more angry than the ones we have. Less bears, more bear-sized spiders that spit flesh-dissolving acid at you sort of thing. :)

This is a super strong article, honestly. All of the details I was looking for to help me build an image in my mind of the place are here, and while it's obviously not complete, it's still a very strong article with good writing and a solid tone. I really enjoyed reading this!

It's a treat to read more about the Sheoin Region Q. This article gave me a good insight in how the Dhanu obtain their food. I feel like you covered a lot here, and everything was well explained. I do have one question though.
Do the Dhanu have ways of dealing with the corruption? I understand the walls and guards help with the predators. But what about the Blossoms? Can they keep them from spreading to the garden. Or at least slow the spread?

Thank you so much <3   And the answer is "sort of", which is the crux of the conflict and story of the entire region. The only real way they've found so far is to go out and try to kill/destroy blossoms that grow closer to their turf. As with any simple solution to a complex problem, it's not entirely effective. The Dhanu are starting to realize that this is a war that they are losing.   So let hope they figure out some better way! :D
