Mephistopheles (Mef-uh-stof-uh-leez)
The 8th archdevil Mephistopheles is the ruler of Caina, the 8th layer of The Black Fortress, where he keeps many of the greatest secrets and contracts. He is the Archdevil that rules over the areas of Contracts, Secrets, and the concept of Devils itself. Mephistopheles originated as the consciousness of the Fortress itself, appearing when Babylon made the plane. The newly formed entity, the first true devil made by Babylon, pledged to oppose his enemies as if they were its own, and became one of Babylon's closest lieutenants.
Mephistopheles was in something of an irritating situation when it came to cults, as despite being second only to Babylon, he had one of, if not the, smallest cults out of all the archdevils. Mephistopheles had been so effective in making himself the image of the devil that he had become generic in the eyes of many mortals, forever frustrating the Archdevil.
