Session 2: Through the door Report
General Summary
When last we saw our heroes they were walking through a door that they had broken off of the hinges. They looked through the open doorway and see a pack of 4 kobolds standing and staring at them The kobolds having heard the commotion of the other side of the door are completely expecting someone or something to come through the door. While they are generally not a race known for their bravery they stand ready with their daggers as the party of adventurers bumble through the door. Leading the pack Danestra and Amber stand awestruck. They truely believed that they were alone in the would be tomb. After fumbling with the door for so long the fact that they were not able to hear any action or commotion on the other side of the door leaves them frozen in the doorway. Mostly blocking any way for the rest of their party to make it through the door. Quenna stands in the background unaware of much that is happening to start with and she haphazardly moves towards the commotion.
Vylphira sees what is happening and immediately leaps into action, she sees that the two party members in front are exposed and unable to react due to their suprise at the situation that is unfolding in front of them. She takes a moment to bless them with the power of Linde to make sure that they are kept safe and strong. They also are given the protection of her faith and belief in her Diety to help if they are attacked. This reaction is almost instinctual and reflexive to her, not because of an exceptional bond or feeling of protectiveness, but the inherent goodness and reverence for life that she holds above all else.
The group of four kobolds seem to move in a way that shows they can communicate nonverbally with one another. They seemlessly move into an offensive stance, leading from around the campfire to surround the threat that has just barraled through their back door. The first two on the right side of the room swing at amber. One misses completely moving past her, a little bit befuddled by how he could have possibly missed a target. The other connects in her upper thigh with a dagger that seems just a little bit to large for the dragonkin.
Quenna catches up to the party and looks around. Finally registering a danger to her and her new friends she assesses the landscape for anything she might do to help. She tries to squeeze through the door between Amber and Danestra but there simply isn't any room. She is unable to do anything to help at this time.
All of the initial reactions of the party seem to happen simultaneously and within seconds. Finally Amber and Danestra are able to register what has happened. They shake themselves out of their disbelief and enter the fray! Vylphira turns quickly and draws her bow. Aiming at one of the kobolds, letting loose an arrow that soars therough the air deftly sailing in between the bodies of her allies, her aim true she hits the creature, who howls in pain.
Danestra realizes that her axes are still solidly lodged within the door behind her from the many failed attempts to knock it down. She turns and reaches behind her grasping solidly at the handle of the closest axe, she pulls as hard as she can, and the handle of the axe slips right through her fingers. She's scared and exhausted from the ordeal that she has just endured through time and space; her anger rises within her and she feels a level of bloodlust building she goes into an absolute blood fury rage as the handle of the axe slips out of her reach. Amber Reaches to her right and draws one of her two daggers her main hand attempts to contact the flesh of one of the kobolds. It misses and glances right off the somewhat hardened and defensive scale of the creature at its right shoulder. In her off hand, she grabs the other dagger from her waist and plunges it towards the beast's stomach again she misses thrown off balance by the size and center of gravity of the creature. The Kobolds now realize what they are dealing with and the group of people that have burst through the door are a true threat to them separate. Two take the left flank and two take the right flank, they position themselves behind the party at either side. Danestra to the left and Amber to the right. The enraged barbarian easily dodges parries and avoids the attacks of the two kobolds that have decided to make her their target, Amber is not so lucky and is hit by one of the kobolds after dodging attacks from the other.
Quenna Makes her way on the scene and starts to have a casual conversation with the other party members in the middle of a combat frenzy. “Hey guys what is going on?” She asks in a bubbly and unconcerned tone while a flurry of blows is landing in either direction around her. She steps in the way of Danestra and her ability to retrieve her axes as soon as she realizes she is in the middle of the fray she draws her shortbow and aims toward one of the kobolds on the left. She draws her bow and lets loose an arrow that hits the upper part of the beast's torso.
Next to Quenna almost simultaneously Vylphira also releases an arrow into the chest of another kobold. Looking at Amber and seeing the extent of her injuries from the attack of the small pack-oriented creatures she also uses her blessings and powers to heal her.
At this point, Danestra is tired of being unarmed, and useless, and grabs her great acts from the door pulling it with all her might. The strength that she didn't know she had from her rage and fury pulls the door off the hinges, the iron hardware that had delicately held the oak monstrosity to the structure of the dungeon room buckles cracks and breaks under the pressure of her strength. A little dumbfounded by her luck she looks at the two kobolds sitting in front of her and decides this is the best thing that could have happened to her she swings in a sweeping motion towards both of them but because of the position of the axe the doors off balance and swings and sways a little bit too far. She misses both of the scurrying creatures in front of her and slams the door into a solid stone wall. The door shatters under the pressure of her blow, pieces of door fly in every direction one of her axes ricochets off of the Stonewall across the room another one still lodged in a plank of oak falls at her feet. Triumphantly though she looks as she realizes one of her axes has remained in her hand generally unscathed and usable as a weapon of destruction. The kobolds freeze, and terror sets in as they realize they may be outmatched by the strength and anger of the Barbarians s standing in front of them. They look in her eyes and at her frame and her body and realize that they may be in for the fight of their life.
Amber continues to throw blow after blow at the Kobolds but they're dexterous and hard to hit she misses again with both of her daggers.
Quenna the druid, adept at communing with the spirits of nature specifically the earth calls forth tremors from the bowels of the dungeon. They shake and shatter the ground beneath two of the Kobolds, roots and rock tangle their feet and bodies as the earth breaks and bends beneath them.
Without any care or thought towards the ending of life, the defensive nature of Vylphira’s human side takes over. She reaches just in front of her enough to grab one of the kobolds and inflicts wounds so terrible that it crumbles and falls at her feet. A lifeless husk, the first enemy to be filled during this battle. As the blood and sinew decorate the battlefield it is only a matter of time before Danestra sets her sights on a wounded Kobold, she swings her axe from above her head as hard as she can. It slices through the kobold with relative ease and makes a resounding thump on the floor beneath it. It's a clean cut, even though her axe is not as sharp as it once was after being launched into a door and suspended in space and time for an undisclosed period of years, the amount of force used to drive it through her enemy splits them in half. The body falls to both sides behind the asks blood sprays the room, it was an inordinate amount of force to be sure exerted upon these creatures. There are two left in their sights.
The remaining kobolds put up a fight, they truly were trying to survive the best way that they knew how. Amber gets hit again with an undercut dagger blow to her lower belly. The small creature starts to burn and glow, Vylphira cast a holy smite on it to stop the violence. Seeing his friends all dead on the ground, blood strewn about the room that they were just using as a common area to tell stories and eat their meals one kobold stops and starts to scream.
“Don’t hurt me. Don’t hurt me. STOP” Incredulous the party looks at one another period amber and Danestra clearly still ready to strike and end the battle before it can be continued. Vylphira and Quenna Though our less sure that violence is the answer to this. They talked their party members down till at least they had an understanding of what was going on. They start to ask questions and before they know it they learned that this little kobold had been given a job. Guard the room. His name was Bolo. He was upset worried and scared. As they talked he made accusations “You killed my friends” and amber argued that she didn't kill anyone. Having a knowledge of kobolds at least in generalities Vylphira pointed out to Amber that it didn't matter that they were individual people, to bolo they were a pack. One of them killed his friends so all of them killed his friends. As they discussed with him what he was doing there, why he was there, and what he knew about the dungeon that they were in bolo revealed that there were large creatures within the confines of their stone prison.
Amber continued to be wary of the small creature and insisted that they tie him up, she was distrustful and angry that he had attacked her. She started to argue with her party members and Vylphira gave her a stern look and said “shoosh” Bolo recognizing this as a means of exerting authority over the elf repeated the gesture. Bolo shared with them that the way to the north was the way out of the dungeon and that he wasn't sure what was in any of the other rooms that would be of interest to the people in the party. The party decided to investigate to the east. They went down a hallway and found a large iron gate that had bars about 2 feet from one another just spaced enough to where a normal-sized human might not be able to get in and out but a kobold or a halfling could very easily slip to and from. Denestra decided that she was going to use her strength, which she had in droves, to try and lift the gate and move it out of the way unfortunately she underestimated her own strength and the ancient nature of the gate itself. The iron gate held its shape however the bolts and brackets holding it to the stone walls around them were not so sturdy. They cracked and buckled under the force that she exerted upon them just like the door. Unfortunately this time the gate was much larger than she had anticipated and weighed much more. As she noticed it starting to fall she tried to roll out of the way as quickly as she could but became trapped underneath it. Amber slipped past her to investigate the room beyond.
As amber came to her room she looked around and saw that there were beds and carcasses of small animals mostly food that one would expect a small dragon creature 2 feed on. She didn't notice anything out of the ordinary or really worth investigating.
Dinesha pushed and pushed and pushed on this gate as hard as she could, at one point she pushed it hard enough to get it off of her and push it up towards the ceiling again almost seating it back where it belonged however it started to roll back down. She again tried to run out of the way, as she stepped backwards 1 foot hit the other foot and then she tumbled over a rock behind her there was no way that she was going to be able to escape this monstrosity of a gate again at the last second though Vylphira grabbed her collar and yanked her as hard as she could out of the way. The gate skimmed the bottom of her feet and an in terror she began to sob.
“MY HERO!” She yelled through tears as she latched onto Vylphira. It was as if all of the trauma that she had endured over the last however many years caught up with her all at once. What it took was this moment in time where she had no control over what was happening around her, and her life was truly immortal danger for her to be able to express just how lost and scared she was.
Bolo had detailed to the party two “Roar” levels. One slightly smaller than the other. Amber unconcerned by the potential threat decided that she wanted to investigate one of the rooms that remained attached 2 this main camp area. Moving to the West she found herself face to face with a large portrait of red dragon. A knight with sword drawn standing in the foreground the dragon large and imposing in the background. The assumption was made that this was one of the “roar” creatures that bolo had been talking about. With an intelligence relatively low and a small creature who existed mostly on instinct it was not outside of the realm of possibility. She investigated the chests and the mounds of treasure in the room noted that didn't appear to be trapped in any meaningful way. One of the boxes was a large crate that was roughly hewn together. It looked like somebody had built a container around an item with no real way into said box. Amber made the decision to go and tell the rest of the party what she had found before making any executive decisions on what to do with the items. Together they decided with a picture of a red dragon and a room full of treasure it was best not to disturb it and they should just move forward to escape their underground living tomb.
