Araxis Age of the Fiends

The world of Araxis was once a verdant place rich in variety and full of a multitude of landscapes not unlike other Prime Worlds such as Toril, Oerth, Golarion and even our own planet Earth. However many centuries ago a great disaster befell Araxis. There was a cabal of clandestine mage clans that sought to wrest control of the entire planet from the many monarchs and leaders that held the mages at bay. They created a series of gates across the planet to the lower planes where the fiends exist. They intended to summon great fiend armies and use them to cut the heads off each state only to come to the rescue of the people by expelling the fiends they themselves had summoned. Unfortunately, the mages had miscalculated in their arrogance. The summoning was triggered ahead of schedule leaving the gates permanently open to the lower planes. All of Araxis’ greatest heroes are believed slain in the battles that followed.
