Life in Sultanate Villages
For those in the more remote villages of the Sultanates, daily life comes replete with myriad threats and struggles. The environment is harsh and unforgiving, and only the strongest and most tenacious of predators survive so deep into the desert. Crops consistently capable of growth are minimal, and heavily subsidized by foraging. Only the most fortunate of villages are established near small oases, or some larger water source. It has given rise, however, to some truly ingenious forms of agriculture, and to some of the best hunters in the world.
These villages produce some of the best hunters in the world, just as readily hunting apex predators as they do prey animals. Trained in everything from hand to hand combat, to archery, knowledge in herbs and healing, these hunters will range far deeper into the desert than others would consider sane. A single kill large enough will feed a village for weeks, leading them to pursue even creatures as deadly as dunecats and drakes. Most wear aspects of their kills or fashion them into more weapons or jewelry; many a hunter wields a bonetooth dagger or wears a drakeskin vest that a noble would kill for. Though they are loathe to part with their secrets and techniques, they can sometimes be persuaded to train an outsider who offers something of equal value.
These villages' farmers are equally skilled, having come to be able to grow some manner of crops in an environment entirely unsuited for it. Groves of cacti provide fruit as well as the meat of the cacti themselves. Juniper is planted in large groups, allowing them to raise small flocks of livestock. Farming takes on a different meaning here, as much of the plants are largely self sufficient; effort goes primarily into the shaping of the land and diversion of water when possible, a key role of the town's resident spell caster.
