Apothecary
In a world filled with magic and gods that imbue some of their followers with healing powers, you might think that there would be no need for something as seemingly rudimentary as apothecaries. However, magic is a limited resource for the people who wield it and there are not enough people who are skilled enough to rid people of disease, a magic that is far more rare than the ability to close up immediate wounds like you could with a healing potion. For the average person an apothecary is typically the first choice of where to go when faced with a common illness.
Purpose / Function
At apothecaries you can buy already mixed medicines for common illnesses such as a cold, or bring a note from a doctor working at a local clinic or hospital and the apothecary will mix the right medication for you.
In some rural areas where there is no doctor nearby, apothecaries become the primary caregiver of the population. Although an apothecary (the person working in the apothecary is called the same thing and that's not at all confusing) has training in a lot of ingredients that can alleviate symptoms of all kinds of illnesses and how to make them into medicines, they don't spend years learning how to correctly diagnose and treat patients.
History
No one is quite sure how the first apothecary came to be but a legend says that followers of Pelor, Melora, Ioun and Sarenrae came together during the early years of the Age of Parting and worked to establish ways of battling the new illnesses that were befalling mortals after The Parting War. Before then, when Arbressian was one plane of existence and every created species lived close to their creators, it is said that there were no illnesses like there are now. There were mortal beings but they lived long, healthy lives unless an accident or a malicious act occurred to end a life early.
