Fulgurite

Also known as "lightning glass", fulgurite is the material created when lightning strikes sand and turns it into a solid mass in sometimes lightning shaped figures. Fulgurite is widely considered to be a sacred gift from Kord, one of the Creator Gods, who is the god of storms among other things.
Others believe that it is a collaboration between Kord and Melora because without the soil of Melora's nature, Kord's lightning couldn't create such a thing. Then some argue that it's an affront to Melora for another god to twist her creation to their will but they are shut down or ignored as all things affect nature and Melora hasn't struck down people for using its resources.

Material Characteristics

The appearance depends on what type of sand, soil or rock is hit by the lightning strike as well as how big of an area the strike impacts. They can be large and have the shape of lightning, spiky rocks, tubes or have other irregular shapes. Smaller pieces are more common than the large sculpture-like ones that resemble lightning.
The surface of fulgurite is typically rough and looks like the soil and other organic material which fused together to form it. Sometimes if the fulgurite's rough surface is polished or cut away it reveals opaque glass within. In very rare cases the entire piece looks like polished glass already upon discovery. There are few of these and barely any that are the larger variant shaped like lightning.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

As it is seen as a gift from Kord by those who worship him, fulgurite is considered sacred and is mostly only used by temples. The bigger naturally occurring lightning shaped sculptures of fulgurite are usually kept intact and displayed as signs of Kord's blessing in temples. This is especially sought after in places where there aren't a lot of wide stretches of sand or other soil that transform in such a way when struck by lightning.
Smaller areas of sand and other soil can get bits and pieces of fulgurite when lightning strikes. These are typically cut into even smaller pieces if needed and used as jewellery for the devout as well as holy symbols for clerics and paladins of Kord.
