Oil
"Now June, one thing you have to learn about, is oil. We use it to keep warm, and to light up in our houses in the night. The government uses it to build roads. But the most important thing it does is uphold a relationship. Atra would have left Arburg decades ago-"
"Can a town do that, dad?" June asked with wide eyes.
"No ones ever done it, but the inhabitants of Atra tried. They tried, alright. Anyway, where was I? Ah yes, the oil kept them in country. They use it to trade with Asmye and Elfaria, and we have even traded with a few Atrians before. They are the only ones in the land with access to oil, and they have somehow developped an extremely efficient way of extractinf it. No one knows how they do it exactly, but we do know that it damn well works.
They signed a pact with the King to signify that as long as their trade relations stayed active, they would not leave. You see, he had threatened to cut off all trade to and from Atra of they left, and that made them pause.
Oil holds a part of our monarchy together. Don't ever forget that."
June nodded vigorously, her eyes still wide.
