Giant's Tooth

... grinding their teeth churned a synthesis of hope at the end of an era!

"Sometimes, we find the cure within the disease."
— short passage from the All-chemia
Giant Folk and those that carry the taxonomic classification, Titano-, are the various species that carry the markers for the Titanothage. This viral disease causes rapid growth and mutation, while also delaying the effects of aging. Instead of dying due to venerable age, these species live long past their normal Life-spans. Initialy, in the Ice Age, when this disease was in its' primal state, it caused deleterious mental degeneration in its' hosts, causing them to become savage and violent. The Myst & Myth Folk exiled their elders as they exhibitted signs of Titanothage.
Inevitably, the Folk began to research a cure for this disease. They found a trace within those who were already infected with the disease. Three key material components were required as part of the formula for treating those in the early stages of Titanothage, one of which was a Giant's Tooth. While a Giant's Tooth was found to have magical properties, it benefitted the Folk as a means towards the cure. Unfortunately, it had to be harvested from an Elder Giant and used quickly; while some were willing to help the Folk in their quest, others had to be captured before they'd relenquish their teeth.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Giant's Tooth contains potent traces of the Titanothage disease. Superstition surrounding this fact proved to be false, as a bite from a Giant wasn't sufficient enough to contract the disease. Instead, keeping a Giant's Tooth could potentially expose one to the contagion, as it takes Time for the disease to manifest. Ironically, those who kept trophy teeth were exposed.
Many used the natural magic contained within to create powerful talismans and totems from these teeth. By carving magical runes into the teeth, powerful binding or calling Spells could be prepared or the tooth could be used as a Spell Component, to empower magic that affects bites or fangs. A talisman against dental pain and growth magic could be fashioned from a tooth shard.

Construction & Production

Harvesting A Giant's Tooth

If a Giant is uncooperative in the task of retrieving a tooth, caution must be used in subduing and extracting it. While this is painful for the Giant, the Titanothage will cause their teeth to regenerate anew.

Many times, a Giant can simply be asked for their tooth in exchange for a good or service. They have enough strength to wrench the teeth from their own jaw if they wished, so it was often advised of travelers to carry a form of tribute to appease the Giant.

Capturing a Giant

To create the Pharmaceutical Compound, shatter the layer of enamel with a hammer. Inner pieces of the tooth, such as the root, are broken. Shards of the tooth are cleansed with alcohol, then turned into a fine dust. Use a mortar and pestle to grind the tooth, adding water and alcohol occasionally, until the mixture becomes a fine paste. Store within a Blue Ice Pot or similar vessel, keeping it dry and free from moisture.
To create a Magical Item, the tooth or a tooth shard must be cleansed in alcohol. Then, a chisel is used to design the magical runes or Spell Matrices necessary for the magic to absorb into the tooth. Special ink or paints are used to finish the tooth. Once dry, polish can be applied. A larger tooth contains more potent Magic. For the purposes of Enchanting, this process takes about an hour and grants 1-2 Spell Slots.

Origin & Significance

The Folk were allied in their dedication to discovering the cure for Titanothage. After augury and divinations, they were directed by the Gods to look within the teeth of their ancestors, the nails of beasts, and the roots of trees to find what they sought. Each of these provided the Folk with the cure near the later Eras of the Ice Age. While this was mainly used to treat the Folk, the cure was distributed to Proto-Humans as well, as their species also contracted this disease in rapid succession, reducing environmental Titanothage contamination.

Legends evolved within the Giant Killers Chronicles of the Arcanum, as Stories began to see cooperation and conformity of the Giant Folk. However, while hope remained on the horizon for the Cultures of Mystomythia, a new Legend surrounding Giants' Teeth emerged.

Poisoned Tooth

Titanothage kept a Giant's mouth free from dental decay. As such, when a Giant was found to have excessive rot, they were described as having Poisoned Teeth. A bite contained diseases beyond Titanothage, and the tooth itself could cause environmental damage when left alone. These Giants suffered greatly under the stress of their pain, causing them to rampage.
A Poisoned Tooth or shard can be placed within soil or the bark of a tree to ruin crops and plants. Blighters often use these teeth in their evil Spell-Craft.

The origin of Poisoned Teeth is a curse upon the Giants from an Eidolon. Even if the tooth is removed, the infection returns, inhabiting another tooth.

The discovery of these teeth led to a variety of magical relics and ancient weapons. Shards were fashioned into primitive knives and javelins, capable of piercing hides. Poisoned Teeth were used to bear finality in each strike, leaving the victim with a diseased wound.

Poisoned Teeth are often associated with Tolcote, Titan of Desolation.

Tolcote of Ten Calamities

Tolcote is a strange entity, even as a Titan of Calamities. It was discovered after finding a Titan's Tooth, lodged in the Earth. Once removed, it caused a tremorous avalanche which leveled the landscape. Tolcote came afterwards to feast on the chilled remains. Those who have been devoured by Tolcote are crushed, body and soul, by the infernal jaws that line the Titan's body cavities. It is a gruesome, aberrant creature covered in teeth and fangs.
Titan's Teeth were often found and left undisturbed, causing rampant growth and infestation of Titanothage in those areas. To remove one brought terrible calamity, but retrieving it unleashed great power. A Titan's Tooth extracted from the Earth releases the Leyline beneath, as these teeth absorb the magical flow of Source. Often they held great Elemental powers; if one survived the encounter with their owner, Tolcote, or the foul fang horrors it has created in its' victims.

Tolcote's Appearance & Origins

Tolcote is associated with the Eidolon, Ctotlith. Once, a Folk Shaman of virtue found his way into OverWorld, intent on vanquishing the Goddess of Destruction, Sebut Sekt. Once inside Sebut Sekt's Tower, the guardian Ctotlith trapped the unfortunate soul within a labyrinth of tricks and tortures, dwindling him into the entity known as Tolcote, or "tooth beast". It was released back into the physical realms through a Dungeon that infected a Leyline.

Tolcote appears as a titannic, slug-like humanoid, with barely recognizable features as a mound of greyish-pink, shiny skin studded in teeth and fangs lurches. Small maws appear, suggested to be the mouths of its' victims, though it is rumored that amongst the rings, one is the original voice of Tolcote, sobbing in despair. Claws with needle sharpness burrow through ice and stone. These teeth bring destruction upon the land when left behind, causing devestating blight and ruin to Leylines.

It is this beast's quest to bite into the Leylines of Pathon, so that it may absorb all of its' energies for Ctotlith and Sebut Sekt.

Measurements
"Units" are measurements, defined by length, width, and weight. A whole Unit is denoted with an "Un" and represents 1 whole measured "Unit" (equivalent to the average length of a forearm). A "Micro-Unit" is denoted with a "Um" in measurements and is the size of an index finger bone. 10 Micro-Units make 1 Un. To measure weight, Unit Burden is calculated relative to the weight of an adult fist. Total Units are measured using decimals.

Author's Notes

Ooof! I'll be honest, I have dental fears, so getting into anything that talks about or discusses teeth is unnerving enough for me. I've heard of some great stories and concepts regarding teeth, and pulled from my experiences to create the monstrous Tolcote. A tooth collector and haunter of mortals, this Eidolon is frightening! We're coming down to the end of the month! Hoping to get some more horror published before the end! Best of good luck- this Spooktober!
