Qirek
Qirek is one of the four major regions of the Arcadian Empire. Qirek, like the other three regions of Arcadia, was established during the ascension of the King and Queen. It is positioned in the South East of the continent. Qirek most notably tolerates some of the highest temperatures, in addition to the highest crime rates in Arcadia. Geographically, much of Qirek is red desert, though wetter parts host many farms, growing grains and cultivating spices. Trade is most prominent across the border to Montevillo, and human trafficking is common.
The people of Qirek prefer to remain anonymous, often going by only one name, and travelling in nomadic clans according to the seasons. It is common for citizens to wear headscarves and headdresses to hide their identity, and provide further anonymity.
The largest city in Qirek is the desert settlement of Jek Nehu, in the central Jek Nehu Desert. The city is home to upwards of 60,000 people and stretches far into the desert. It was originally established on a series of desert geysers, which ran dry years after the population increased further. It endured a crippling plague during the seventh century, and now is home to a mass burial site (an area of the city now known as Ten Kiet).
Geography
Qirek is exceedingly hot, particularly in the south and the deserts to the south-east. Much of Qirek is unpopulated, and most people move in caravans with their clans from place to place. The Jek Nehu Desert covers large stretches of Qirek and is rich in minerals. Underground geysers provide water to much of the population, and baobab trees provide water to those outside the central desert. The coastal regions of Qirek meet with the rough eastern sea. These regions are still inhabitable, but the coastal population sees themselves as divided from the central people.
Fauna & Flora
Qirek is home to numerous wild creatures, including dinosaurs and sand serpents. These are hunted and used in traditional farming techniques, as well as being traded across the border.
The driest desert region is fairly sparse regarding its flora. People rely on flax-like plants that grow near oases and geysers for many purposes. This flax can be refined for clothing, or used for baskets, rope, or other tools. Large baobab trees often grow in clusters and soak up water from beneath the ground, which can be accessed with particular tools.
Natural Resources
Minerals are mined in the north of Qirek, near the Oledo Peaks. These include coal, iron, and gold, which is shipped to Montevillo and used to make a variety of goods.
Tourism
Tourism is lacking in Qirek. Refugees from Kinnegarde and slaves trafficked from Montevillo are the main human imports. Due to the lack of centralised power in Qirek, the economy is not reliant on tourism. Montevillo provides much more beautiful sights, and travelers from Kinnegarde often pass through Qirek on their way to Montevillo. Many follow the Messende River in order to avoid the Oledo Peaks, and many settlements have popped up along its banks.
