Lycan

  The Lycan, or lycanthrope as they are called as the word for the virus they're contaminated with, is a magically engineered species. The disease they carry is a half dormant and non-contagious virus which rather than kill or turn their hosts sick, morph them into canine like people with long snouts, hair and overall the body of a wolfman with a slightly impaired intellect and psyche but increased beastial senses.   These creatures are not necessarily dangerous or any less civil than your ordinary mortal. Though werekin and related to the werewolf, these people are not affected by any craze or bloodlust normally and while their abilities are enhanced during full moon, as the lycanthropy virus becomes more active, it's still not infectious nor dangerous.   Many lycan hence live ordinary lives among citizenry, but with the usage of wolfsbane amulets, nature magic rites and a whole lot of wickedness, certain forces have managed to counter-manipulate the tools which can aid the lycan in suppressing their beastkin side to take command of them instead.   This is why many of their ilk, despite most being ordinary people who ran into bad luck, are overwhelmed in representation among cult and criminal activity for their moderately low populace. That, and some will actively embrace lycanthropy out of free will to simply gain power.
