Qualifications
To qualify as a Raven Herald one needs good theological knowledge within the beliefs of the Temple of Sarak. These religious studies need also be backed up with a good knowledge of mathematics, alchemy, physics, a military degree among spycraft and subterfuge as well as magical knowledge within both the occult, shadow magic, necromancy and a hint of what they are up against in concerns of various abyssal cults theological decrees.
This is only education, as a Raven Herald needs to be a pure beast physically and mentally to ascend into the rank. Not only must one accomplish a strength, agility and psychological test with near top scores to be taken in as a possible candidate, but they also require to master skills such as gun-fu, bartitsu, shadowmancy and the tongue of corvid birds to qualify as an initiate.
To become a fully fledged Raven Herald, one needs to use every tool in the belt they have to accomplish a set of missions. Some set to be facing threats so dangerous they are practically impossible for the individual to solve guns blazing. Other missions also offer pointless tasks such as gardening or helping an old lady throw out a bunch of trash. Though these tasks might be far beyond their status and skill, it's important to teach initiates to be humble and patient, lest they make irreversable misstakes.
Career Progression
The Heralds are already top of the chart. The best of the best which the Blackbloods have to offer and to get there is no simple task. Only to be part of the Blackbloods, one need to somehow swear fealty to Sarak and be granted the blessing of black blood to flow within their veins. Which turns a person into a fledgeling. Through carefull studies, training and furthering the cause of their quest against corruption can a fledgeling ascend into an agent. Then from an agent rank up untill they eventually meet the first qualification of becomming a Herald. Time, patience and field experience.
Payment & Reimbursement
Raven Heralds are despite their rank and work not paid nearly as well as most other elite agents connected to religious or official national organizations. The reasoning behind their more meager payment does not come from greed though, but that their adventure alone is often considered payment enough for the agents. Still, their pay is nowhere near bad, as they can easily afford everything needed to live life with ease, just not with extravagant luxury.
Other Benefits
Other benefits from the rank comes with being sent on adventures and epic quests all over the world, where there are no rules to follow but the commandments of Sarak. Outfits and gear are also specifically tailored and created for the tasks ahead. As all ravens, these agents are naturally no less eager to new shiny trinkets and tricksy toys to bamboozle their opposition. Or just blow their roof of the house with.
Perception
Purpose
The role a Raven Herald hold is to serve as a holy guardian of the soul. Wherever individuals or groups start to thieve and pervert the souls of innocents, or attempt to ascend and summon creatures of immortal beings to wreak havoc on the mortal realms, the Heralds ensure death's decree is upheld.
Like black birds of ill omen, they'll decend on those who feed the darkest evils of the world. Demanding them to change their ways with words and persuation. Though if that does not work, they sometimes utilize intimidation, terror and sheer cruelty to scar their foes minds off a dark path. As effective as they are, a mission with demands the handling of mortals does rarely ever end in the persons death. Though monsters and divine beings are more often than not sent back to their respective realms with lethal force and brutal accuracy.
Social Status
Raven Heralds are accepted within most societies as good men and women in charge with defending the world. Though there are places like Diestria where their existance is seen as an affront to various groups lifestyles, especially those which prey on the helpless to ascend their own power. They are also unfairly spited by a lot of religious institutions which deem Sarak evil as a Death God, with their pride refusing them to aknowledge that for any religiously based group in the world, the Blackbloods have the least mortals murdered in their deity's name. With a close second with the Barrkadi Circle.
Demographics
There's only a handfull of Raven Heralds within the world, while the agents range up into the thousands. It's believed that between three dozen to fifty Raven Heralds are active within the field at this very time.
History
The rank is one of the most ancient titles to still be given out to date. Tens of thousand years ago, when the world was corrupted by the madness of abyssal lords the first Herald was created and named Kasus Khzar. The champion and hero of ancient times is said to have fought millions of abyssal spawn on a vast crusade the world over to purge it from their primordial sin. Though in more modern times it's believed to have been closer to tens of thousand or even a few hundered thousand foes defeated by clever tactics with vast armies. If the legend is to believe for starters.
