Race Rarity
Arceiron is a vast world, populated by a great amount of various races. Not every race exists in every region of the world and not everyone is welcome everywhere. When looking at the articles of certain races, you might notice that some of them list a number of different rarity descriptors. These descriptor tell us how rare a race is at a certain region of Arceiron. This can influence the availability of a race at character creation and thus prevent you from playing such a race, in certain campaigns. When you want to create a new character for a campaign in Arceiron, the DM will tell you what general region the campaign is currently focused in (this can change over the course of a campaign).
CURVED Rarity
CURVED is an acronym describing the rarity of a player's race, lineage, tribe, or group in your setting. It stands for:- Common. The majority of the population in this area consists of these races.
- Uncommon. You can probably find one or a family of these races in a smaller village or community
- Rare. You can probably find one or a handful of these races in a larger town, city, or capital.
- Very rare. These races can be found somewhere in the country or geopolitical realm of this setting, but they are few and far between (or isolated to one location).
- Exotic. These races are supported, but will probably be the only one of their kind. Perhaps they only exist outside of the country / dimension / etc.
- Don't exist. These races don't show up and are not supported as Player Races in this campaign setting.
Common Races
A race described as common, means they are native to a region, widespread and make up a large part of the region's population. They can often be encountered throughout the campaign and it is generally easier to include their backstory into the setting and plot. Barring some special situations they are usually welcomed throughout the region and even if some groups might not like them, there's usually enough of their own people to just ignore the others.
Common races are available for play with no restrictions to the character or the party.
Uncommon Races
A race described as uncommon might still be native to a region, or they might have migrated there in more recent times (many dozen years can still be a short time compared to the history of a region and population). Maybe they were the original natives of a region and got overwhelmed by younger more rapidly expanding populations, or maybe they just don't reproduce as fast or as often. Whatever might be the case, these races aren't as common as common races, but can still be met and seen often enough so everyone knows about them and is aware of them. They usually make up a smaller, but still considerable amount of a region's population and are almost as easy to integrate into a campaign as common races are.
There are no restrictions to creating a character of an uncommon race, but the DM might not allow more than 2-3 uncommon race characters to be created for a party at the same time (either limiting a specific race, or limiting uncommon races as a whole, depending on the type of campaign).
Rare Races
A race described as rare is usually either not native to a region or only exists in very limited numbers. They can be seen here and there, but there's often not more than one in a town or a hand full in a city. They are often seen as odd by the majority, but get tolerated. These races often come from neighboring realms, or have migrated to the region in small numbers.
There are no restrictions to creating a character of an uncommon race, but the DM might not allow more than 1-2 rare race characters to be created for a party at the same time (either limiting a specific race, or limiting rare races as a whole, depending on the type of campaign).
Very Rare Race
A race described as very rare is an unusual sight in a region. If they were once considered native, they probably aren't anymore, or come from another place alltogether. Another explanation as to why they only make up a very small part of a region's population might be that they just don't exist in great numbers at all. They might not even be fully natural beings, but created through the influence of some otherworldly forces.
A character of thess race might be met with prejudice and aversity by the larger population of the region, or meeting them might be considered a very rare and special occasition. Many common folk might have never met a character of your race, despite some of them living in this region. Your race might even be very rare enough, that you've never met another of your kind, outside of your direct family.
When creating a character of a very rare race, work with your DM more closely, to figure out an appropriate backstory and lifetyle situation for your character. E.g. they might be a wandering adventurer, just passing through this region, they might have been captured and brought here by some major force, or they might come from a small local enclave. You should talk to your DM about your choice before creating such a character, to see if it fits the style of campaign they are going to be running. The DM might not allow more than 1 very rare race characters to be created for a party at the same time (either limiting a specific race, or limiting very rare races as a whole, depending on the type of campaign).
Exotic Races
A race described as exotic simply does not natively exist in a region and meeting one of them there is a truly exceptional and rare occurance. They make up no real part of a region's population and the total residents of all exotic races inside a region might account for less than 1% of the total population. They might come from a far away place, or even from another plane of existence. Maybe their total world population is so low, that there's no place they can really call their own and are forced to always live as the exotic outsiders.
A character of these races will most certainly be noticed and might have to deal with adversity, curiosity, prejudice, and sometimes even outright hostility on a regular basis.
Characters of these races are generally not available for character creation in a campaign at that time. If you really want to play an exotic race, ask your DM and work closely with them to try and find a reasonable backstory. Characters of these races also usually are limited in their and Factions, as they most likely won't belong to one of the local groups.
