Vaelin al Saffiyah

Vaelin al Saffiyah is a Dune Human, originating from the lands of Marquandt at the continent of Ysselhaim. He was born in a high caste of his people and is the son of the influential merchant lord and slavetrader, Zakhif al Saffiyah. Being part of the Merchant's Guild himself and owning a high reputation by his name alone, Vaelin decided to find his own way in life and became a swordsman, trained in the use of swift blades. He deeply disagreed to the ways of his father and separated himself from him and his name as best as he could. At one point in his life he met Ruby Darwish, a Tiefling and member of the Lorekeepers and befriended her, after he rescued her from some slavetraders, who wanted to catch the exotic Tiefling. Since that time, they traveled many miles together and she's the only one, who's ever able to bring a smile at Vaelin's face and to give him the feeling, he's understood.   In the year 3174 AoM Ruby heard of a lucrative mission in the town of Everton and convinced Vaelin to travel into the Kingdom of Germatria in the Empire of Ehlona. After they arrived, they banded together with other adventurers to an important mission, which would change the fate of the whole kingdom and maybe the whole world.   Vaelin is a protagonist in the first season of the chronicle Age of Change - The Aspect of Space.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Vaelin is a relatively small grown person, but since being a warrior he is in a well trained shape nonetheless. His origin from Marquandt is very obvious because of his suntanned skin, his brown eyes and his short dark hair. He hasn't the typical build of a warrior, for not being bulky or muscular in any way. He prefers to be swift and agile, which make him even deadlier in any situation.

Body Features

Vaelin has suntanned skin, which makes his origin from the desert continent of Moram very obvious to most people. His dark hair is short cutted and he has a very slender build, despite being a skilled and talented warrior. He's also a small person, smaller then most other warriors, which often leads to others underestimate him.

Facial Features

The Marquandti has brown eyes and his dark hair is short cutted. He not wears a beard of some sort, instead being perfectly shaved most of the time. He has the face of a real soldier, hardened and cold, especially through the fact, that he most of the time looks stoic and emotionless. Vaelin barely laughs and most of the time has a neutral expression at his face, so his opponents, but also his comrades, never know, what he is thinking.

Special abilities

Natural Abilities

  • Dune Origins: Vaelin grew up in the harsh environment of the desert continent of Moram. From an early age on, he's adapted very well to the extreme climate of his homeland. He's adapted that well to hot climate, that he suffers no restrictions through the scorching sun or the flickering heat of the day and even stays able to fight and to act normally in that surroundings. He's also adapted to the fact, that there isn't always fresh water or food to sustain himself. To this, Vaelin is used to stay an extended amount of time without water and food, not falling that fast to dehydration and malnutrition like a Human normally would.

Trained Abilities

  • Swordsmanship: From his youth onward Vaelin trained the usage of swords, especially the type of swift and slender blades mostly common to his homelands like scimitars and falchions. He's also able to wield nearly all types of blades in battle, but prefers the smaller and slender ones, since they fit his personal style of fighting much more. Vaelin normally uses two blades in combination, a fighting style, that needs even more skill to master. Like a derwish on the battlefield, he slices through armor and flesh alike, defeating his enemies with speed and accuracy, while wielding his blades in offense and defense, whatever the situation needs.
  • Skilled Warrior: Beside swords, Vaelin has a great understanding of nearly all types of weapons and armory, the world of mortals has to offer. He studied the usage and techniques of different continents, before he found his own fighting style and adapted himself to it. Because of this, he normally not uses heavy weapons or armory, but he would be able to, if he wants. Beside that, he has learned to be that strong in will, that he can regenerate from even deadly wounds in a matter of seconds and suppress any pain for a while to continue fighting, if needed. He also has learned to push himself over the limits of his physical body for a short time, allowing him to maximize his attacking potential and swiftness in battle to nearly supernatural heights.
  • A tactical Mind: As a rational person, who never let himself being lead by emotions, Vaelin is a great leader and a tactician, who has learned to find the best way to solve problems and to read others to gain personal advantage. Following the traditions of his people he is a great haggler, having a great understanding of the worth of things and how he must argue, to get the best price for himself. Beside that, he's also able to adapt fast to any given situation and make a plan to solve upcoming trouble. Despite being a silent person, he often takes lead in critical situations, having a great overview over the field of battle, understanding changing situations in mere moments and being able to adapt to a new situation very fast.
  • Master of the Sworddance: Vaelin has mastered the secret technique used by the best Fighters of his homeland: The Art of Sworddance. This technique allows to forgo the heavy armor and weaponry warriors often use to defend themselves for speed, agility and swiftness. These skilled warriors watches a fight like a dance and move their bodies in fast motion to escape incoming attacks, dodging out of their way and then counterattack with deadly precision into the most vulnerable places. It needs a lot of skill to master that technique, since it's needed to watch the battlefield and the enemy and plan your movement beforehand in a matter of seconds to react. One single mistake can be deadly, since there is no armor to defend them. It's a technique on the brink of death, but since Vaelin mastered it, he's a true derwish on the battlefield, an unstoppable storm of blades.

Apparel & Accessories

Vaelin mostly wears traditional clothing of his homeland Marquandt. He wears just a leather armor beneath the cloth made of silk, that fully cover up most of his body. Since his style of fighting needs him to be agile and swift, he choose a armor with not much defensive abilities, instead being light and not hinder his movements in any ways. Some small metalplates are covering his right shoulder, his hands, forearms and legs, the most important parts of his body as a Fighter. The rest of his clothes is made of silk, not giving him much defense. The cloth he is wearing also is made in the design of his homelands, decorated with tassels at his left shoulder while his pants are decorated with patterns. He also has a turban, which helps him to get shielded from the sandstorms and sunlight in the hot climate of Moram. In other lands he often not needs it, but sometimes wear it nonetheless, to hide his facial expressions and therefore make others unaware of his thinkings. At his fingers he also wear some golden rings, showing his wealth as part of the Merchant's Guild. He also has a very noble necklace, an heirloom, to testify his position in the high caste of his people, but he most often not show that to others and hide his heritage from strangers. Vaelin carries a changing number of scimitars at the left and right side of his hips, depending on how many swords he loose in battle against enemies who are able to destroy his blades.

Specialized Equipment

Vaelin isn't in possession of any specialized or magical equipment yet. As someone who prefer skill and technique over magical support he never was very interested to get enchanted weapons and magical crafted armory on his journey though.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Early Years

Vaelin was born in the year 3148 AoM in Marquandt as the son of the wealthy and influential merchant lord Zakhif al Saffiyah. The expectations on Vaelin were high, since everyone expected him to follow in his father's footsteps one day, gaining control of his trade empire. By his name alone he became an influential and respected member of the Merchant's Guild, from an early age on. Many other merchants deeply respected him and in his youth he befriended Mualim ab Lian, a merchant and trader of the guild, who was goodhearted and friendly to the young boy. But Vaelin also grew up with the harsh reality of the lands of Marquandt. Being confronted with slavery and death as the preferred punishment for failures he grew up into a broody and grim personality, deeply believing, that a man never can trust others fully and always have to be hard and gruelsome to get, what he wants.

A path of his own

Despite adapting to the lifestyle of his people and inheriting most of their philosophies, Vaelin deeply disagreed to the usage of slavery and the handling of slaves in Marquandt. He not wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, like everyone was expecting of him and while remaining a part of the Merchant's Guild, he separated himself from his family and started to train swordplay to become an honorable swordsman and warrior. His hard training would be highly efficient, since Vaelin became an amazing swordsman, skilled in the use of blades. He preferred swift blades instead of the traditional bigger swords like longswords and trained a special technique, native to his people: the art of Sword Dance. Mastering this technique allowed him to forgo heavy armor and becoming some sort of derwish at the battlefield.   While training and perfecting his skills with the blades, Vaelin adapted the faith of the goddess Marena and began worshipping her. Her dogma of blood as the essence of life, her philosophy of honoring life while living to the fullest to reach personal goals, but also to strike merciless and with vengeance against all enemies was exactly the way, Vaelin wanted to adapt for himself. So he followed her tenets of faith, fully adapting to her views of the world. For all his fights to come onwards, he accustomed to honor the goddess through a bloody ritual, whenever he survives a fight: He draws her symbol into the ground with the blood of his fallen enemies. This would become Vaelin's way of thanking Marena for sparing him from death one more time.   At one point while on his early journeys throughout Moram, Vaelin got into a situation where he tried to do the "right thing" instead of gaining personal advantage. He tried his best, especially since he was a more idealistic man at this point, who still believed, he can change the world to the better, at least a bit. But he failed in his attempt, a failure, which would deeply impact Vaelin on his further path. He became even more broody and embittered then before, believing, that the world is harsh and gruelsome and that there is no place for some idealistic beliefs. For that, the grim mercenary was born.

Befriending Ruby

At an unknown point after leaving his family behind and traveling throughout the desert continent of Moram, Vaelin met Ruby Darwish, a Tiefling and Bard, who also was a member of the Lorekeepers in the city of Pontaris. She was in trouble, getting attacked by some slavetraders, who wanted to catch the exotic Tiefling to sell her for a good price. Vaelin safed Ruby by interfering and defeating the slavetraders in the ensuing battle. Afterwards he learned, that Ruby traveled the world to gather informations, lore and knowledge, to add them to the libraries of her people. Her open minded personality, her optimistic, but still realistic worldview and her ability to accept others as they are led Vaelin, who never was an open minded individual himself, to finally befriending her and following her through some adventures at the desert continent. He became some sort of bodyguard to Ruby, who was well talented in magic, but not in swordplay and fighting. Together they complemented each other very well for their journeys to come, traveling many miles together.

A lucrative mission

At one point in the early year 3174 AoM, while still traveling together, Ruby heard rumors about Lord Rhasmir K. Shasa, a nobleman of the small town of Everton in the Kingdom of Germatria. She heard rumors, that he is seeking strong and powerful individuals ready to get on a dangerous mission to retrieve a mysterious artifact out of some long forgotten ruins. The danger would be immense, but the payment shall be very well. While Ruby was interested in the artifact itself and the adventure around it, Vaelin got interested by the challenge this mission would prove to him and the payment as well. Finally Ruby was able to convince him to travel to Everton to get hired for the mission.

Vaelin wants to interrogate him with violence and torture, but not doing it at Lark's request. With the help of Karl the group infiltrates the camp of the fishermen, where Vaelin confronts Lu'kosh in person. He gets struck down twice, but his comrades are saving him from death and together they defeat Lu'kosh. While they interrogate him, Lu'kosh get's killed by an assassian and Vaelin's attempt to catch this masked man, fails. While search through the camp, they find a letter signed with a "V". Since they heard about Venice of Rowantes before, this is the proof, that the fishermen are in contact with the crime syndicate Nighthowl. Before leaving the camp behind, Vaelin uses the blood of his enemies and draws the sign of Marena into the ground, sending his regards to the goddess.   On the way back to Everton, Vaelin keeps watch with Galen and the two are talking about their different philosophies in battle and their ways of fighting. While at watch they find a trail of blood leading to a nearby embankment. The next morning Vaelin and Galen leading their group to the embankment again, following the trace even further. They find some elvish ruins near a lake, meeting the little girl Liana, who get's raised by wolves. Vaelin isn't interested in the girl and annoyed of the distraction from their mission. When Vereza Balefist suggests to sell the child as a slave, he refuses that idea, since he deeply hates slavery and not wanted to be involved in such things. Later on, the group returns to Everton, reporting Nerissa Hart, what they found. Vaelin later joins Vereza Balefist to the forge and afterwards to the tavern for some drinks. After the rest of the group arrived, they make plans to solve the second task, defeating Goblins who are endangering the trade routes. Vaelin is annoyed from the behaviour of the adventurers, especially of Galen and when the Elf get's into a dispute with fellow Elf Veros Valanodel, he settle it, by calling them both childish and that they are not realizing the true burden of a warrior.   The next morning the group leaves Everton towards Colman's Retreat. The meet the earth elemental Foundling who leads the group to the cave of the Goblins where Vaelin and the others charge inside. They fight their way through the cave, until they confront Grak'poot Da Boss. Since he is an unhonorable being, an enraged Vaelin attacks him with some sortie maneuver, even following him into the thorns of the cave, making sure, the Goblin get's killed. After he ensured his death, Vaelin uses the blood of the goblin chieftain to draw the symbol of Marena into the sand. In the aftermath of the battle they notice a small passage through the thorns into another chamber, finding a massive skeleton with wings sitting there. Even Vaelin is able to sense the enormous magical potential inside it. They manage to bring the skeleton out of the cave to bury it where Vaelin speaks a few words of honor. In the aftermath of the mission the group reaches Colman's Retreat, but their leader, Caros Colman insults everyone, who is different, including Vaelin. Nonetheless he deescalates the situation so the group can leave the settlement without further trouble. The next evening Vaelin again keeps watch with Galen and the two again philosophize over the art of battle and the honor of a warrior.   When returning to Everton, the group meets the hunters of Darkhunt in the tavern. They are tasked with killing a monster in the woods, the young girl Liana. Vaelin leaves the tavern to check out the barn, just to see a massive Bulette inside. He meets the rest of his group on his way back and clarifies, that he not cares about that girl. Hunting her is allowed in the eyes of the law, so this is fine to him. On the way back to the tavern Vaelin contacts Lazard Megara and apologizes for the behaviour of his comrades, ensuing, that he isn't interested in disturbing their hunting plans. He even warns them, that his comrades might interfere with their work even further. The next morning Vaelin joins the group when inspecting the barn again. There he and the othes witness the arrival of a mysterious man, who finally takes the imprisoned Liana with him. In the aftermath the group confronts Darkhunt again, while getting into dispute with each other too. After Lark settled the dispute, the group finishs their missions in Everton with telling Danras Brightcobble, that the roads are safe again and with meeting Korprax Ninoldac to deliever him the ingredients for a very special sort of alcohol.   Afterwards the group meets again with Vyra Carnuso who is impressed by the deeds of the group and let them meet Lord Shasa who tasks the adventurers to recover the Scrolls of Kai'ratha from the ruins of the same name. Like the others, Vaelin signing a magical contract which ensures, that all sides will keep their words. The group decides to take path through Abbotsbury and leaves the town of Everton. Vaelin get entrusted with two letters from steward Nerissa Hart to bring it to the leading council of Abbotsbury. On their journey they get confronted with the Director again, but Vaelin doesn't care and ignores the Fey, while the others settle their conflict. Afterwards he again keeps watch with Galen and like before the two warriors are talking, while strange things are happening around them, with the Director tormenting them. The next day they meet Karl Leiserfluss on the road again and near a tree with some nutritious fruits the group takes another rest, where Vaelin and Galen again keeps watch.   The next day the group reaches Abbotsbury and takes a break in the tavern first. Vaelin, who's frustrated that the group not uses the day and continues their mission as soon as possible, leaves to check out the local merchants. He reaches the bazar and his father's name leads him to Samor Manda, the local trade prince. Vaelin offers him the trades he and his group got back from Lu'kosh and the fishermen and gets paid a good coin for bringing them back. He notices that Manda seems not to care for the fact, that his trades got stolen. Vaelin leads some worker of the trade prince to the outskirts of the town to Askan, where they can take back their goods. Lea informs him about her encounter with Tarvax Blackbend, which leads to Vaelin complain about the naive ways of thinking of the group, especially of Lark and Galen. He believes them to not being prepared for such enemies and therefore becoming a burden to the mission sooner or later. He meets the rest of the group on their way to Captain Vyke Norris where he delivers one of the letters he got from Nerissa Hart. He speaks about his impression, that Samor Manda might work with Nighthowl. Later, back in the tavern, the group makes the decision, that they should fulfill some tasks from the bulletin board to strengthen themselves before taking up their quest for Shasa. Vaelin is frustrated at first, that their mission will get delayed again, but after hearing stories about the Ruins of Kai'ratha through old adventurer Whiteeye, he also agrees to improve and prepare. He declines the offer of the group to pay some coins to let his scimitars become magically enchanted, since he wants to rely on skill and technique, not into magic, to defeat his enemies.   At night, the group tries to confront Nighthowl by getting into contact with them. Vaelin separates himself from the group, entering the shady tavern shortly afterwards and witness, how the group get's catched by Tarvax Blackbend and brought to Venice of Rowantes. He tries to follow them, but loose trace in the streets, so he returns to the tavern, waiting for the return of his comrades. After they returned, Vaelin learns, that Nighthowl blackmails the group to work for them, which he denies, but still believing confronting them was a dumb idea in the first place anyway. The next morning the group get brought to Baron Sanford van Heyne, where Vaelin hands over the second letter from Nerissa Hart. Since the baron can't be convinced about the threat of Nighthowl in his city, Vaelin goes to the bazar again to gather some informations from the local merchants. Through his name and contacts he encounters Ibn al Funzel, who talks a lot, but can't help him. Afterwards he gets addressed by Halfling merchant Picklesnitch, who tells the Fighter, that she believes the Merchant's Guild is working with Nighthowl and about their tattooes. A frustrated Vaelin gets into a dispute with Captain Vyke Norris, wanting him to take Tarvax Blackbend prisoner, since he is sure, that this man has the tattoo of Nighthowl.   Later, the group gets invited by Grida Bronzescale who offers her assistance, when they help her to find some hints of corruption towards Baron Sanford van Heyne and the leading council. They visit the brothel La Fleur d'Amour, where Vaelin and Ruby gets into contact with Amelya de Leon, owner of the brothel and make a deal to trade informations against the fulfillment of her job from the bulletin board. While continuing their search for information the group visits Oathbound Keep to inform Nharis van Debury and the knights of Babylon about the rumors they heard about Abbot Salar, member of the council. The knights and the adventurers pay a visit to the abbey and the situations escalates, when Abbot Salar reveals himself as a follower of Xelakor. A battle ensues between the knights and the cultists, where Vaelin joins, entering the abbey. The group fights their way through the cultists, up into the second floor, where they encounter "The Visitor". Fighting this creature seems to be pointless, until Vaelin finds it weakpoint, the glowing skull at the altar. His attempt of destroying it fails and his chest get's slashed open, but the skull gets destroyed anyway. Vaelin gots safed by Lark's healing magic and his wounds cleansed from demonic infection by Nharis van Debury himself.   In the aftermath of the battle the group check out the catacombs beneath the abbey and find an imprisoned, undead, man, which they free out of his prison in one of the coffins: Ezekiel Dearan Springhope I.. He gives the group a lot of informations about the Kai'ratha Temple and even leads them to the library of the abbey. While the others stay a while in the library, Vaelin leaves them behind. As a Fighter he isn't helpful with researching supernatural things, so he goes back to the tavern to calm down from his near death experience. He not even joins the others when they return for some drinks to celebrate their victory. The confrontation with the Visitor had a deep impact at him so he needs time for himself. He get's visited by Galen later on and finally follows Galen's request to join him and the others for planning their next steps.   Back in the taproom the group gets contacted by some courier, delivering the hand of Karl Leiserfluss, as a threat of Nighthowl. Vaelin interrogates the courier by threatening him. They decide to bring the courier to Vyke Norris as a proof of the influence of Nighthowl, but get attacked by some assassins on their way. Defeating one of them, they want to take him as an even better proof, but have to fend off against another assassin, who get's killed by Vaelin. The group brings the assassin to Vyke Norris, but some of his guards starts to oppose them, revealing themselves as being part of Nighthowl. Vaelin kills a lot of the treacherous soldiers without any mercy, but Vyke Norris get's killed. The group overcomes the assassins, taking another one of them prisoner and leaving with him, the body of Vyke Norris and Lieutenant Melina Kentham. They hide in some elvish ruins. The next day the group meet Grida Bronzescale and Arkanta van Shadris at the seat of the Baron, witnessing Lady Bronzescale becoming the new regent of the town. After gaining a massive financial reward for their involvement in rebuilding the order, the group pays a last visit to Ezekiel Dearan Springhope I. just to find him killed again. With the help of a priest of the order of Babylon they can speak with him one more time to reveal, that he got killed by a woman with white hair, possibly Venice of Rowantes. After gathering some last informations from the dead abbot how to reach the Ruins of Kai'ratha, they let him move onward to the afterlife. Vaelin is convinced, that Venice and Nighthowl are also interested in the Scrolls of Kai'ratha or atleast in something that is hidden inside the ruins.   The group stays in Abbotsbury a last day to celebrate the Firekiss Festival. Vaelin joins Galen for a visit at the bazar to help the Elf selling some equipment for a good price. Afterwards they smoke a waterpipe together, following the traditions of the Marquandti. The same evening Vaelin and the others return to the brothel to solve the mission for Amelya de Leon, since Vaelin is a man honoring his promises. He waits for the molesting drunkard Koban Ruikshank to enter the tavern and confronts the drunken Ivailan, so a fight breaks out. Vaelin get's overwhelmed at first, but with the help of his comrades he turns the tides, defeating Koban, binding him and handing him over to Amelya.   The next day the group leaves Abbotsbury for good and after two days of travel they reach the tunnelsystem leading to the plateau, where the Ruins of Kai'ratha are located. They want to enter the tunnel prepared, but when they hear the pleas of help from a woman out of the cavern in the middle of the night, they enter right away, despite Vaelin's apprehension, it might be a trap. The Fighter is right with this, when the entrance into the tunnel vanishes and the group get's confronted with Corvax Zenarkaras, using a runestone to teleport them into another part of the tunnels. The group pass the tunnels, at first having to fight slimy creatures, which nearly corrodes the weapons of Vaelin. Afterwards he takes the lead of the group until they reach a runestone where ghostly figures appears out of it. Vaelin blocks the path to his comrades with his body, defending them, while the others destroy the runestone, which dissolves the ghosts instantly. After reaching the final chamber of the tunnels, the group gets attacked by an Hookhorror. Vaelin tries to destroy the stone with his scimitars instantly, which sends the hookhorror into a rage. The group defeat the creature but are trapped. Noticing they are trapped in the tunnels Vaelin get's frustrated. When a mysterious entity contacts the group and offers them to pass her realm to leave the caverns, but they can only access by making a blood sacrifice, Vaelin don't get bothered by this fact and sacrifices some of his blood to leave. He gets sucked into a realm of eternal darkness, but by passing it finding himself at the mountain path leading to the Ruins of Kai'ratha. Vaelin discovers a destroyed crypt, convincing the others to take a rest here. At night he and Ruby keeping watch together, talking about the future after fulfilling their mission. Vaelin believes, that the three others are good company for Ruby, while he is just a mercenary not interested in becoming a hero, so he might return to Marquandt after the quest is fulfilled. He convinces Ruby to stay with the others and she accepts his decision at the end.   Hours later Vaelin reaches the courtyard of the temple ruins first, encountering Faenyal Fyresoul a priest of Vita and member of the Harbingers of Dawn. Faenyal explains the true meaning of the Scrolls of Kai'ratha and the hidden informations about the whereabouts of the Aspect of Space inside. Vaelin not cares for that, he simply wants to fulfill his mission. Nonetheless the group band together with Faenyal and they fight some Skeleton Minotaur, guarding the entrance. Vaelin's blades are useless at first, but he is able to avoid the attacks of the creature, slicing the legs of it, finally bringing it down. Using the bones of the guardian to pass the entrance, Vaelin leads the group into the underground of the temple. It's Vaelin's expertise as a Fighter and mercenary helping the group overcome different traps and killing a lot of undeads. He organizes the attacks, making strategies and planning the positions leading the group deeper into the cavern. After checking out one of the countless chambers on their way down there, Vaelin encounters a woman, who looks humanoid, but is a supernatural being. She's a creature of the cosmos: The "Endless One". She is trapped inside this chamber, but offers the group her help, when they free her. The group denies her offer at first, sceptical about this strange being, but realizing soon enough, that their strength is near it's end and they can't overcome any more obstacles. Vaelin, being pragmatic, wants to free her and accept her offer. He convinces the others to accept it too and so the group destroy the three sigils, who keeps her trapped by killing the guardians. So they dissolve the sigils and free the Endless One. With her help the group overcomes any further traps, finally reaching the central chamber of the temple.   The group gets into a fight with Corvax Zenarkaras, his adjutant Vazjotan, some cultists and the undeads and spirits they are summoning. A massive fight breaks out, where Vaelin fights his way through the room, killing cultists and undeads alike. They finally get the Scrolls of Kai'ratha handed over by Corvax, who leaves the battlefield without killing his enemies. After he left, Vaelin stops Ruby from taking a look into the Scrolls, who remembers her, that it's part of their mission to not read them. He has no interest in that artifacts and the powers behind, he just want to finish their mission to get payed. Vaelin leads the group to the east of the temple, since the Endless One tells him, that there might be a way out. But by reaching the chamber, it's filled with undeads, overwhelming the group instantly. Vaelin tries to hold them back, but get's overwhelmed by the sheer amount of enemies in front of him. While trying to flank them he gets separated from the others and finally struck down. A potion given to him by Lea saves his life. But the attempt of saving Ruby fails and Vaelin has to realize, that his best friend died, succumbed to her wounds. He needs a moment to overcome that shock, before getting back his confidence, urging Lea to leave. He even wants to leave Galen behind, who fled into the tunnels, leading the undeads away from the group. But Lark not wants to leave his friend behind, charging into the tunnels, followed by Vaelin, who not want to let Lark die too. They find Galen and Vaelin give the Elf his last potion to save him from death. Since Faenyal Fyresoul had also succumbed to his wounds, Vaelin took his body with them.   After leaving the temple through the eastern gate, reaching some natural cave, the group takes a break. Vaelin need a moment to fully realize, that Ruby had died. He fulfills the rituals of Marena in honor of Ruby and speaks to the Endless One. Vaelin explains to her question, that he wants to return to Marquandt after taking his payment. He offers the Endless One to join him. He wants to work as a mercenary and assassin again and could make good use of her abilities and her company. She accepts his offer after get promised by him, that Marquandt is a land, where enough lost souls are waiting to get devoured.
Season II: Adventures in the Empire
After taking a rest in the cave, the group reaches a plateau at the mountains where they make a pyre to burn the bodies of Ruby Darwish and Faenyal Fyresoul. Vaelin gets the chance to say his goodbye to Ruby, making his peace with her death. Days later the group reaches Everton again, instantly visiting Lord Shasa to handing over the Scrolls of Kai'ratha. When they give him the scrolls, the noble is satisfied and pays what was promised, so Vaelin takes a malachit and also get's his part of the silver. He let the others keep Ruby's part of the payment, convinced, that the Tiefling would have want it that way. He thanks them all, that they would have been willing to accept Ruby as part of their group and give her the feeling of a family, something, he wasn't able to. He then says his goodbye. Vaelin not comments Galen's offer, that he always can call the "Hexschütz" for help and his hope to meet again, but give him his hand as a sign of respect and to settle their differences. Afterwards he leaves, followed by the Endless One, with the destination Marquandt...

Education

As the son of an influential merchant lord of Marquandt, Vaelin gots a formidable education in his youth. He has a great understanding of trading, financial purposes and how to haggle with people of all colors to make a good bargain for himself. For that the Fighter needs to have a good understanding of people, being able to read them and to argue well. It can be assumed, that his education trained him in that ways too, making him a formidable and charismatic person and leader. Despite his young age, he also has a great understanding of how the world works and in his mind is much more experienced then many others his age.

Employment

After leaving his family traditions behind, Vaelin also declined the option of becoming a merchant like his father. Instead he took up arms, became a swordsman and therefore a mercenary. Vaelin fully lives that life up to this day, being a mercenary in his essence and very soul. He is a sellsword, inheriting the traits of a true mercenary like shifting loyalities, payment as his only interest and no thoughts about the greater goods or consequences of his deeds. He also want to be watched as a mercenary, not seeing himself as an adventurer by any means.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Vaelin was part of the group of adventurers who were able to recover the lost Scrolls of Kai'ratha out of the Ruins of Kai'ratha. To achieve this he and his comrades had to overcome many obstacles like a magical barrier shielding the temple, reaching the mountain plateau through a dangerous tunnelsystem, defeating hordes of undeads and surviving deadly traps en masse. In the end they even had to fight against Corvax Zenarkaras and his minions to get the scrolls in their possession. Bringing them to the shady Lord Shasa might have consequences for the world as a whole, but it's nonetheless one of the greatest missions, Vaelin ever had fulfilled.   When the adventurers fought against the Demon only known by the name "The Visitor", it was Vaelin who turned the tide of that battle. While the Demon seemed nearly indestructible and all their attempts fruitless, Vaelin noticed the skull at the altar nearby, realizing, that the essence of the demon is bound to it. He tried to destroy that skull in a brave attempt, but got his chest sliced open, which nearly killed him. But his bravery led the others to fulfill that task, destroying the skull and therefore saving Abbotsbury from the horrible Demon.

Failures & Embarrassments

At one point while traveling with his companions Vaelin dropped the hint, that he once tried to "do the right thing", not for payment, but for some greater purpose. There are no details known about this deed of his, but it can be assumed, that Vaelin failed horribly. This failure deeply impacted him to the point, where he abandoned any further attempt of fighting for a greater purpose then his own gain. He became a broody personality, without any hope and convinced, that the world is harsh and gruelsome.   Vaelin failed to safe his best and only friend Ruby Darwish from a grim fate. He followed her to the Kingdom of Germatria to accomplish the mission for Lord Shasa, always trying his best to protect Ruby from harm. While in the Temple of Kai'ratha, Vaelin made the fatal decision to lead the group to the eastern gate for escape. There he brings the exhausted adventurers in the middle of an undead horde, which overwhelmed them instantly. Vaelin wasn't able to hold them back by his own and therefore Ruby got attacked and finally killed. Vaelin never would forgive himself this misjudgment, but at one point accepted the death of his only friend as his burden he have to bear the rest of his life, as punishment for his failure.

Mental Trauma

The hardships of his youth, which stems from the gruelsome world he grew up into and the failures he made led Vaelin to become a scarred and broken man. He not believes into heroes or have any hope, that the world could be changed for the better. He resigned himself into believing, that he just can accept the circumstances, making the best of it and adapting to the world as it is, becoming hard, gruelsome and sometimes even callous towards others. He had learned, that this might be the only way to success and to find his way in the world. No one, not even his best friend Ruby Darwish could convince him otherwise and when she finally died, he just get even more confident in his thoughts, as her death is the ultimate proof, that he is right in his ways.

Intellectual Characteristics

Vaelin is an intelligent man, not a brute warrior. He's very smart and fast thinking, because of the fighting techniques he uses are very delicate and filigree, requiring a lot of skill. He has to watch his enemies, their movements and behaviour and adapt to it quickly to find weaknesses in their defense he can abuse. Only for that he can compensate his lack of armor and his light weaponry. So it always was important for Vaelin to have a talent for observation and to be quick minded, so he can adapt in a matter of mere seconds, which can make the difference between victory and death. Vaelin can adapt quickly to any given situation, improvising if needed, but even planning strategies beforehand, when necessary. His logical and sometimes emotionless way of thinking often leads him to success, since he can make the objectively rational decision, not led by emotion or personal perspectives. This abilites make him a good leader for any given group and bring others to follow his lead, since he seems to be competent in his doing.   He's also a very eloquent speaker, even if he rarely does so. His good observation skills are helpful to find out, what others want to hear, so he can say the right words in the right situation, subtly manipulating the mind of others by a few words alone. Despite never being a sympathetic man, he can convince others of his opinion by his knowledge, tactical finesse and eloquence. As a smart and worldly man, who is at the same time very rational in his thinkings, he often has a point, which helps him to bring others at his side.

Morality & Philosophy

Personality Traits
I rarely show emotions and I'm mostly calm and collected to people, appearing cold sometimes. The truth is, it is just best for business though. I'm also very disciplined and dependable in all situations.

Ideals
A duel is like a dance. It's art and I despise just brutal slaugther. I also don't ask questions, if you can pay enough for it.

Bonds
I not share many close contacts with others. My closest bonds are to my father, even if I separated myself from him a while ago and to Ruby Darwish, who is my best and maybe only real friend. I'm also in good faith with a merchant from the merchant guild I know from the past.

Flaws
I easily blow up at people who joke about my height and I'm kinda paranoid about people talking about it.

Taboos

Vaelin despises and hates acts of slavery. Originating from Marquandt, where slavery is a normal thing, he hates it nonetheless and would never enslave anyone himself, since that fate might be worse then death to him. The hatred for this acts are the reason, he had left his family behind and refused to follow in his father's footsteps as an influential merchant lord somewhere in Marquandt.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

To the outside it seems, that Vaelin's only motivation is his personal gain. He is a mercenary with all his soul and so the next payment and making a good contract is, what he is looking for. Since he not wants to get involved in political conflicts, moral discussions or emotional battles he just fights for himself and for the money he get's paid. But sometimes, on rare occasions, another part of Vaelin is shown. A person who deeply cares for the few people, he respects and likes. In such moments he take up arms to fight for them instead of his own gain and tries his best to protect them at any cost. But Vaelin is not a man, that wants to be a hero or improve the world to the better. He's fighting for his own personal interests, his own philosophy and his own moral code, living the life of a true sellsword and warrior.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Vaelin is a smart man, able to adapt fast to most situations and react in a proper way. He's able to evaluate even things, he hadn't heard of before and make the best decisions afterwards. His ability to not let himself being lead by emotions is a crucial factor in his effectiveness, since he can make rational decisions, leading to the greatest success. He not even cares, if that decision might be watched as gruelsome or hard, since Vaelin knows, that sometimes a man has to make such decisions to be successful and to reach his personal goals.   His lack of emotions sometimes is Vaelin's greatest flaw. He makes rational decisions, deeply believing, that this is, how the world works and to be weak would be his inevitable downfall. But often enough this decisions deeply offend others around him, especially his comrades and allies. Sometimes Vaelin even undermine the efforts of his allies, when he comes to the conclusion, that their decision is driven by emotion and not helpful to their task. In such moments Vaelin often not understand their reactions or why they are offended and when confronted with it, even tell them how weak they are and that they have to become stronger. That leads to Vaelin taking up a role as an outsider inside his group, a role, that is self-chosen by him.

Likes & Dislikes

Vaelin deeply admires the philosophy of fighting and honor and therefore follows the way of the warrior. Since he not follows any official code as a warrior, he had made his own tenets, that are binding to him and which helps him to find his way in the world. He also likes any sort of effectiveness and focus on the missions given to him. It's part of his code to be effective and not let himself being distracted by any means.   Therefore Vaelin hates any distractions from his given mission. He has no understanding for the fact, that his comrades often enough let themselves being distracted by people, objects or situations. He thinks, that there is no value in helping anyone in the world that needs their help, since he not watch himself as some sort of hero. For that, it's just distraction and therefore a waste of time, which he truly dislikes. Vaelin also has no understanding of dreamer in any forms. He not likes people who want to be heroes or improve the world to the better, making their name immortal or their deeds heroic, since that are just fools in his eyes. Vaelin has a very grounded outview on the world and everyone, who is a dreamer or philosophize about heroism will one day pay the price for it. And he not want to be part of it.

Virtues & Personality perks

As a very grounded person, who is able to do, what is needed to be done, Vaelin is good into pushing others forwards, despite any setbacks that might happen. He is a strong personality, able to lead others, not through many words, but through deeds, focused on achieving victory. His inner strength can be inspiring for others, when they are loosing their hope or courage in dire moments. Vaelin is good into bringing them back into line, to continue fighting. He leads with example, since he never gives up himself, facing great danger and threats with courage and showing, that it's possible to fight the greatest monsters with just a blade in hand.   Vaelin also is very effective in everything, he's doing. By focusing on his mission he have to achieve, he can ensure, that other's will not loose themselves in trivialities, bringing them back into line, when needed. This make's him a formidable leader too, able to lead his group to victory and success, without getting off track halfway through it.

Vices & Personality flaws

Vaelin has lost any sort of idealism a long time ago. Grown up in a harsh world and later on affected by some horrible failures he learned, that the world is unforgiving and therefore he no longer believes in heroism or the fact, that the world can be changed by mortal men. He had learned to believe, that he is just an insignificant part of the great scheme of things, unable to change anything for the better. This belief often enough leads to Vaelin not helping others where he could, since he believe, it would not change anything and is wasted time and energy. He is solely focused on himself and his personal gain, making him blind for the greater things around him and the possibilities he might have.   While he is not drinking any sort of alcohol, which is part of his religious and traditional beliefs, Vaelin has an addiction to smoking. Be it a waterpipe or the weed he carries with him, Vaelin often smokes, when he need to calm down, to relax or to organize his thoughts. He prefers to be alone in such moments, enjoying the calmness and silence surrounding him. Therefore he normally separates himself from others, finding a silent place, where he can be alone with his thoughts, free from any disturbing influence.   Vaelin tends to be more violent against others then needed. That especially happens, when he tries to interrogate a prisoner or anyone, who shall give him any informations. He tends to use his weaponry, threating others to slice open their chest, their neck or cut off their limbs. Since Vaelin is emotionless in some sort and focused on achieving what he need, he would do that and not just threatening others. Sometimes even his allies are shocked, how gruelsome Vaelin can be, so they have to stop him from doing such hideous acts.

Representation & Legacy

Vaelin was one of the adventurers that indirectly and unknowingly brought the Aspect of Space back into the mortal world by finding the Scrolls of Kai'ratha, which lead the way to the powerful artifact. This Aspect of Power would greatly influence the mortal realm afterwards, leading to a lot of trouble for the newly started Age of Change. It even enables the return of some of the most powerful individuals back into the realm and the return of darkness into the world.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Ruby Darwish

The Tiefling Ruby Darwish is Vaelin's best and maybe even the only friend, the warrior ever had. He saved her from slavetraders in the city of Pontaris at one point and afterwards forged a bond of respect and friendship with her, since Ruby is a positive person, able to even bring out some emotions of the stoic warrior. They traveled together many miles in the years to come and Vaelin watched himself as some sort of bodyguard to Ruby, who is excellent in the usage of magic, but not a skilled warrior herself. They complemented each other very well in their abilities and therefore were successful on their travels. Vaelin not shared her lust for adventure and her curiosity about the things, the world has to offer, but he followed her nonetheless to protect her and stay at her side. This was the deepest bond Vaelin ever had forged to another person. Ruby was the only person, Vaelin was ready to fight for and to protect her. Being by her side he wasn't interested in his personal gain alone, but in keeping her safe. After Ruby died in the Ruins of Kai'ratha through a fatal decision he made before, Vaelin lost his only friend and had to handle the burden of being, in some way, responsible to her death. This burden would affect the broody warrior in some negative way, just increasing his stoic belief in the fact, that the world is hard and only the hardest can survive in it.

Mualim ab Lian

Mualim ab Lian is a merchant in the homeland of Vaelin, which the warrior often met in his youth. He's also part of the Merchant's Guild and the two share a bond of respect to each other. Vaelin fully knows, that Mualim is a bit of a shady merchant, but is respecting Vaelin's heritage, so he never would try to take advantage of him in any way. The two of them share a bond of respect to each other, especially since Mualim is a friendly man towards Vaelin, always having an ear to his thoughts and troubles.

The Endless One

The group met the Endless One in the Ruins of Kai'ratha, freeing the mysterious being from the Far Realms by breaking the sigils keeping her imprisoned in the ruins. She helped them to fulfill their mission in the ruins afterwards and even led them to their escape. After the death of Ruby Darwish and even before that happened, Vaelin had made the decision to leave the group of adventurers, wanting to return into his homeland to keep up his profession as a mercenary again. He offers the Endless One to join him, since her supernatural abilities and her fatalistic outview on the world seemed to be helpful to his efforts in making himself a name. He told her, that in Marquandt there are enough shady individuals she can devour to sate her hunger, which even helps him, when he has the mission to eliminate others. He finally left the Kingdom of Germatria by her side. What happens afterwards is unknown, but the mercenary and his monstrous companion could have become a dangerous duo in Marquanport afterwards.

Galen Silvers

While being part of the adventurer group, that tried to recover the Scrolls of Kai'ratha, Vaelin met the Sun Elf Galen Silvers. This man, a warrior himself, but using range weapons, strives for glory and heroism, wanting to become the greatest hero in the realm. His outviews were the exact opposite to Vaelin. While Galen loves the thrill of a good fight to improve his name and to strengthen his self-given title, Vaelin watches fighting as a necessity, which should not be any sort of fun. His realistic outview and Galen's beliefs of a dreamer clashed at more then just one occassion. But it was their differences that led to them taking curiosity in the beliefs of the other over the course of their travels. Later on, nearly every night, they took watch together, philosophize over the ways of a warrior, their motivations, beliefs and ambitions. They started to learn from each other, improving their own outview of the world and what it truly means to be a warrior. In the end they shared some respect for each other the moment, they separated. Would their journey had continued, it's not impossible to believe, that the two of them would have become respected comrades, who never could be friends, because of their different beliefs, but sharing a bond of respect and appreciation, only happens between true warriors.

Family Ties

Zakhif al Saffiyah

Vaelin's father is an influential member of the Merchant's Guild, living only for trade and money. His wealth had brought his family into the high caste of his homeland, giving them a lot of political influence too. Zakhif is only looking to earn more money and to make another good deal out of a situation. Since he adopted the way of the warrior, Vaelin isn't fully able to understand his father's interests and don't share his opinion and worldview anymore, even though the fact, he inherit some of his father's traits, like the ability of being good at haggling and always trying to make the best deal. Since Zakhif also is a slavetrader, a trade, Vaelin deeply despises, he had separated himself from his father to the point, where he not wanted to follow into his footsteps anymore or even being in contact with him. If Vaelin is still the heir of the trade empire his father built, is unknown, but he himself isn't proud of his legacy and tries to hide this connection, whenever possible.

Religious Views

Marena

Vaelin is a worshipper of Marena, the crimson Lady, the goddess of blood, passion and vengeance. After he started to follow the way of the warrior, young Vaelin heard of the dogma the followers of Marena believes in and decided, that this is a philosophy, he can follow himself. He accepted her teachings of reaching destination by living to the fullest and feeling passion in every moment, even in the tide of battle. Her philosophy of striking down enemies with vengeance is an aspect, Vaelin also deeply admires. He enjoys the idea of celebrating every day of life, since as a warrior, he never know, when it could be over and which fight would be his last. Vaelin fears death and so the philosophy of staying alive and living to the fullest is a concept, deeply impressing him. After every battle he wins and survives, Vaelin use the blood of his enemies to draw the sign of Marena, the bleeding heart, into the ground, while praying and thanking the goddess, that she spared him, gifting him another day of life.

Social Aptitude

Vaelin is deeply convinced of the rightness of his philosophy and beliefs and never fear to speak them out loudly, even in the most inappropriate of situations. He watches everyone as a fool, who not shares his worldview or is a dreamer, who hopes to build up a better future and has no trouble to tell them that. He is rational and sometimes gruelsome and this traits, together with his deep convictions of the hardships of the world, making him a person, who get's respected by others for his stoic beliefs, but also feared often enough. Vaelin isn't good company to celebrate or just enjoying a good evening or relaxing. To him only the next mission or the next battle exists and he is not interested in distractions of any sort. He not want to hear the life stories of others, their problems or thoughts. Since he often enough shows that openly, he offends others very easily, which results in them not contacting him anymore the next time. To Vaelin, this isn't a problem, since he not want to get disturbed by the problems of the world anyway, just living for his own gain and own personal advantage.   As someone originating from a high caste himself, Vaelin has very good manners, respecting titles and noble positions and reacting proper when speaking to someone, who isn't a mere commoner. By knowing, that most of the money and the best missions are coming from the nobles, he tries to stand in good faith to them, even while often enough not sharing their philosophies or worldviews. Vaelin also deeply respects the law of any realm, he is traveling through. He not differs between a decision by law and a decision by righteousness, since that is always the same to him. The law of a kingdom or realm must be strictly executed, otherwise the strength of the leader is worth nothing. He never would try to safe someone from a trial or execution, even not, when the person seems to be innocent, since he deeply believes into the law and has no interest in getting into any conflict with the rulers of a realm.

Mannerisms

Vaelin is a taciturn person, often not speaking in a situation, holding himself back and just watching, with a grim look at his face, making his own thoughts without sharing them. Vaelin never let others see any emotions or what he is feeling and he only speaks, when it fits his own advantage and when it's about something, he cares for. Otherwise he has nothing to say and often enough tend to leave a social interaction instead of saying anything. Sometimes he not even follow his comrades into any conversations or visits, preferring to wait outside a shop, a house or a tavern until they finished their business there. Since he not shares his thoughts with others, he tends to stay alone a extended amount of time to think about a situation only for himself. Getting disturbed in such moments let Vaelin often react angrily or annoyed.

Speech

Vaelin always speaks with a calm and controlled voice, never showing any signs of emotions or his true feelings in a situation. His words are sharp and on point however, often offending others deeply, a fact, he knows about, but not caring for.

Wealth & Financial state

Vaelin is part of the Merchant's Guild and also the son of a very influential merchant lord. He's also a member of the high caste in his homeland and therefore something like a nobleman. In theory, Vaelin have access to a lot of wealth and is the heir of a respectable fortune. Since he distanced himself from his father and normally hide his origins from others, Vaelin rarely can make use of that, but in fact, he easily could be a rich and wealthy man, if he would like to be.
