Session 7: No, Please Don't Go
General Summary
As the group of Deja, Leif, R'kir, and Wiliman return to the Calla's Flight, Pitri, Krusk and Alinar try to reinforce the Timbernacles' Manor. Krusk, thinking ahead, has Pitri and Alinar try out Luminara's Vengeance. Both Pitri and Alinar were successful, using it to create a beam of lightning and acid, fire and ice, respectively. Proud of himself, Pitri asks Alinar to watch him try a final attempt. "Hey bitch, watch this!" he said casting a poison blast through the technological spell focus. Not noticing the attempt, and seething with rage, Alinar turns into her usual giant spider form and prepares to attack Pitri. Pitri attempts to fly off The frequent use of the item caused it to need to recharge. Krusk rests, still covered in burns and in a great deal of pain, though he sporadically helps move more wood towards the main gate to brace it.
As the first group returns to the Calla's Flight, they regroup with Roland Dovalan, Lysandre, and Doc Chopper to go back and reinforce the manor, help Krusk to recover from his injuries, and then track down JESTER.
As they pass back through the ruins of Hobart Bay, they see dead kobold corpses scattered about, with faces melted and scars and wounds caused by magical means. Some powerful magic has cut a swath of destruction through the draconic forces swarming about town. Passing near the market square, atop a nearby tower they see a humanoid figure, clad all in black with a mask for a face, a glowing circle in the chest and glowing blue eyes. It reaches into the body of a dead young black dragon, reach into its body and pull out it's arcane core.
Doc Chopper quickly tends to Krusk, greatly alleviating his pain and then turns his attention to Deja, finally having the opportunity to heal her. After some time checking the perimeter, the group takes a rest, uneasy but exhausted.
In the morning, they awake to the smell of roasting meat, Doc Chopper has used some available kobolds to make breakfast, and prepared a few dragon steaks. The group plans their next move and decide they should take the opportunity to go after JESTER. Breaking camp, they stealthily move their way towards the guard tower on the other side of town, looking for the dungeon. Along the way, they find a dead green dragon, with a hole in a its chest, just like the what R'kir and Leif had seen the night before. Krusk looks it over and can see that its core has been extracted. The dragon's scales were burnt with casutic damage, covered in cuts from broken glass, broken wing and snapped horns; it's broken body tossed into the storefront. It was beaten to death, whipped around like a toy. Searching the storefront for useful items, they find leatherworker's tools, some needles, and some money.
With an eye towards the skies, the party heads back towards their goal, the prison. Nearing the garrison and prison, kobold bodies become more frequent. Quite a few died assaulting the fortress. As the main gate nears sight, more and more kobolds and even half dragons are strewn throughout the streets, some still bleeding and moaning. Most of their wounds are from gunfire and axes. Thanks to excellent signage within the fortress, the party quickly locates the dungeon prison. Tiptoeing around the prison building, Leif and Ali investigate. It's clear that a last stand was made here, though the city's defenders were overrun, some barricades have been placed within the dungeon. There is a pair of fighters, clad in plate armor and full metal helms, guarding a hallway. Corpses lie in each cell, but in one, there is a half elf man, reclined on a pile of straw, with a Suppression Collar around his neck. His face his covered in stubble, his greasy hair a poor match for his stained, but fine clothes.
"Watch ya'll talking about?" he popped up [in a vaguely Australian, not super proper British accent] Do you have any food?"
Leif offers him a goodberry, and Alinar conjures water to drink.
"What are you two doing around here?" JESTER asks.
"We're trying to break you out, actually," Alinar responds.
"REALLY?!" JESTER shouts besides himself...then pausing, clearing his throat, he whispers, "Really? You are the finest people I have met in quite a while. Actually, if you can break this collar off of me, I can get out myself."
The men in the hallway Bounty Hunter's Guild
Alinar asks, "What are you in for?"
He replies, "You know, a little of this, a little of that, I upset the wrong people, and know I'm here," with a convincing grin.
"How about this," Alinar asks, as her eyes go white and eight green sparks shoot from her fingertips, planting themselves into the hallway and sprouting into eight giant wolf spiders, "we take care of those dudes and we'll be inside soon."
Hearing the description of the men inside the building, and stealthily looking through a window, Deja and Roland suspect the men are members of the Bounty Hunter's Guild and try to approach openly.
Almost instantly, one of the men recognizes Deja. "Deja, is that you?" he says, lowering a rifle.
"Yup it's me. Hold your fire, and lower your weapons or we will light you up," Deja responded.
A tense exchange ensues, but Deja convinces both of them that the men are holed up because of the attack, and they relate they were hunting the bounty on a prisoner who had died. They fought off most of the kobolds and have taken refuge in the prison.
Searching the prison, R'kir and Roland find some supplies and the suppression collars and their corresponding keystones.
They proceed to find and interrogate JESTER who is very reluctant to part with the power of his card. After much deliberation, they think they have JESTER convinced to seal away the power of his card back into the Jester card. Krusk casts silence so he can't slip away, but JESTER managed to slip away once his suppression collar was loosed.
