LDC network
The Long Distance Communication (LDC) Network was created by Yozish-a wizard and inventor in Ermesh. He invented a writing implement that the ink was inside rather than having to dip it in the ink repeatedly while writing. After creating this be played around with a spell or two and eventually enchanted a pair of the writing implements so that when one was picked up and used, the other would also write. At first it was a limited distance and would only work in another room. But over time he worked the enchantment to be stronger and the distance became greater. He sent one of the enchanted writing implements (EWI) to a fellow wizard to test and with great excitement found they could correspond immediately. Yozish enchanted another pair and was soon selling them to the public. As word got out people started talking and soon dubbed it "Instant Mail".
Instant mail was popular with lovers, the military, traveling merchants, guilds, and anyone sending messages long distance. The reduced time enabled them to communicate quickly and official LDC depots were set up where people could go and pay a small fee to send a message to another Depot where it would be taken and delivered to the recipient.
Yozish also invented a spell which enchanted an EWI that would note down anything that was said. He called the spell Dictation.
He also invented a long roll of paper that turned and unfurled as the EWI wrote which negated the need for someone to watch and add new sheets of paper to prevent the EWI from writing over itself.
Sadly, when the City was lost in the Terrible Sandstorm so were Yozish's inventions.
Manufacturing
The manufacturing process is lost but there are hopes that documentation or the place they were manufactured will be unearthed. If this happened people may be able to recreate it.
Social Impact
This technology improved people's ability to communicate quickly - especially with warnings if invaders were spotted, bad weather was coming, a rulers decrees or if a cure was found for a new disease.
Access & Availability
Currently there may be one or two pairs that survived but if they do exist they are well guarded and not very well known.
Discovery
This technology was written about in some of the extant documents of the Ayrithian Empire which have been uncovered as archaeologists dig up the old city of Ernesh.
The more I read the more intersted I was with the final use of the device. Connecting high end wizards can be a challenge without spending spell slots and still needing them to be influential in fights or evil plots. My world has something similar for all businesses and people that own buildings that require daily communications to run. This is a mix of sending spell and a bag of holding on my end. Where they can send messages and small items to and from anywhere. Overall really enjoyed this article. I hope the people can find Yozish's LDC and EWI.
Thank you so much! That's very kind. I am excited to see how it turns out.
