Pre-New Years Gift Giving/Returning Rituals in Fairdell
Describe a tradition of gift-giving in your world — #WorldEmberGift
In Fairdell there is a tradition. Before the New Year Celebrations begin, people must return things that have been given to them to their rightful owners. In particular, those in charge must divide up any excess left over from taxes and offerings and gift each family/individual a share. People often take this opportunity to gift things they were not missing to the holder permanently. It is seen as a cleansing ritual to prepare for the celebrations to come. Anything loaned to or borrowed from those who have passed on are returned by/to family members who may then offer it to a place of refuge or sanctuary for those in need. To honour their loved one.
Food is often made, gifted and shared with neighbours as preparations are made for the upcoming festival. There are onion and swede cakes, blackberry and corn juices, and of course cabbage and cheese rolls. Extra food is often returned with the borrowed items as a way to say thank you.
On the final night before the festival begins, Mulled apple or orange wines are heated up on every street and people gather around sharing stories and giving nuts and dried fruits to the children. People thank each other for giving the gift of story/song. And tip a drink out for the gods.
