Starship Comms

The basic-grade starship comms system (this is not a modification, and is included on any stock starship) allows the crew to communicate in real time with any party within 10 light-years of them who is at least equivalently equipped.

If the intended recipient is outside this range, communication is still possible, however correspondence will not be in real time. Instead, one-way messages can be sent that will arrive after an amount of time dependent on the distance, according to the formula:

Transmission time (minutes) = Distance (light-years) ÷ 500

(In other words, it takes 10 minutes per 5,000 light-years of distance.)
