Firebrand
Frenzy beyond boiling
For many barbarians, a war is felt as a surge of power and adrenaline, igniting the bodies and minds in an ever-increasing heat of battle. For some, this fiery rage spews forth, manifesting their inner fire into the physical realm. These barbarians are known as firebrands, who channel their rage into their bodies and weapons, empowering them with an intense and burning fire. While some firebrands view their power as a blessing from the Primordial Fire, any with burning passion and rage can unleash their inner fire to explosive and devastating effect.
The firebrand is most common in the lands of the Golden Khanate, in which fervent worship of the Primordial Fire meet with the the fires of raiding and wars often seen in their homelands.
A firebrand can call upon rage and inner fire, empowering her weapons and spirit. Starting at 1st level, a firebrand can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, she can rage for 2 additional rounds. Temporary increases to Constitution, such as those gained from rage and spells like bear’s endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a firebrand can rage per day. A firebrand can enter rage as a free action. The total number of rounds of rage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours do not need to be consecutive.
While in rage, the firebrand channels her anger outwards, projecting her inner fire upon the arms she wields. Weapons held by a firebrand gain the flaming weapon quality and gains a +4 morale bonus to her Constitution, as well as a +2 morale bonus on Will saves. In addition, she takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase to Constitution grants the firebrand 2 hit points per Hit Dice, but these disappear when the rage ends and are not lost first like temporary hit points. While in rage, a firebrand cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.
A firebrand can end her rage as a free action and is fatigued after rage for a number of rounds equal to 2 times the number of rounds spent in the rage. A firebrand cannot enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted but can otherwise enter rage multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a firebrand falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends, placing her in peril of death.
This ability alters rage.
At 7th level, a firebrand gains fire resistance 5. At 13th level, a firebrand gains fire resistance 10. At 19th level, the firebrand gains immunity to fire.
This ability replaces damage reduction.
At 11th level, when a firebrand enters rage, their weapons are further empowered, gaining the benefits of a flaming burst weapon instead of flaming. The firebrand's inner fire burns brighter, granting a +2 morale bonus to her Strength, her morale bonus for Constitution increases to +6, and the morale bonus on her Will saves increases to +3.
This ability alters greater rage.
While in rage, a firebrand of 14th level or higher becomes enveloped in a wreath of flames that lash out at nearby foes. Each enemy who starts their round next to the firebrand during their rage suffers 5 fire damage.
This ability replaces trap sense and indomitable will.
