Great Library of Caelanos
Endless stacks of eldritch knowledge
The Great Library of Caelanos is a servitor plane of the Shadow. Like many of the nearby planes of the multiverse, this plane is a part of the Dragon's Domain, a set of planes believed to be under dominion of the Gilded Dragon (A.K.A. the Shadow).
The Great Library of Caelanos is a massive plane-wide library that is said to contain more knowledge than could be read in a hundred lifetimes of men, if not more. It is home to millions of books, scrolls and documents that have been painstaking gathered, translated, and organized from across all of the planes of the Dragon's Domain. The plane is also home to numerous of the Shadow's servants, namely the fetchlings, who maintain, study and gather new material for its ever increasing stacks. The plane is said to be the size of a metropolis, with the Library and adjoining support buildings making up the vast majority of space on the plane.
The Library hosts numerous services, including the translation and copy of fetchling-foreign books, the manufacture of new books, and archival for the documentation of major fetchling organizations such as the Order of the Gilded Dragon. The library also serves as a university for wizards, clerics or theologians of the Shadow. It contains numerous classrooms, studies, dormitories and all the other necessities of life on the plane. The plane is fairly lightly populated even with its comparatively large size. Naturally, these services are reserved for the Shadow's followers - any others found on the plane are hunted by relentless creatures of living ink and malice.
Little is known about the beginnings of the plane prior to the building of the Library. Some believe it was once a large tract of earth that floated across the Transitive Plane, and was built upon and converted by the fetchlings to serve as their archives. The plane and library are named after a powerful wizard, Caelanos, who is said to be the founder of the library. While Caelanos is long dead, it is said that his will lives on in the plane, guiding lost students to new intriguing knowledge or guarding the stacks against intruders through the ink creatures.
The Library contains knowledge about nearly every subject imaginable, but most are dedicated to theology, philosophy, history and magical arts. As a result, it is a beacon for scholars across the Dragon's Domain. Some even pretend to be Shadow cultists to try to glean knowledge from the Library about their ancient and eldritch rituals. The majority of these attempts are foiled by the Library's defenders; the last screams of these intruders ring out in the otherwise eerily silent library.
