War Augur

Witches forged in steel

For many common folk, their first idea of witches are often some notion of withered crones brewing over cauldrons. Yet, in a world often filled with strife and peril, even the witches guided by ancestral spirits or other eldritch powers seek to wrap themselves in the time-honored protection of armors and shields. These witches are known as war augurs, the seers and hexxers of the battlefield. For many war augurs, their purposes are plain, seeking their destinies as adventurers or soldiers of fortune, but for numerous others, they take up their arms and armor in purpose of other goals known only to themselves and their patrons.

The war augur is most common in Rian, a land that often is often embroiled in raiding and wars, and also often eschews or muddles traditional religions in favor in beliefs of destiny and fate.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency

A war augur is proficient with all simple weapons and martial weapons. A magus is also proficient with light armor. He can cast magus spells while wearing light armor or use a light or heavy shield without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a magus wearing medium armor, heavy armor, or a tower shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component. A multiclass war augur still incurs the normal arcane spell failure chance for arcane spells received from other classes.

Diminished Spellcasting

Unlike more traditional witches, the war augur trained in the use of weapons and armor, allowing them less time to develop their magical talent. The war augur receives one fewer spell slot at each spell level. When an war augur gets no spells per day at a spell level, he can cast patron spells of that level normally, but can only cast nonpatron spells of that level if he gets them as bonus spells.

This ability alters the witch's spellcasting.

Medium Armor

At 10th level, a war augur gains proficiency with medium armor. A war augur can cast magus spells while wearing medium armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a magus wearing heavy armor or using a tower shield incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component.

This ability replaces the witch's 10th level hex.
