The Watchers

May my hand and heart be true…. May my eyes and ears never deceive me…. May my mind always question

The Watchers have existed for millennia. They originally started as a group of human scribes calling themselves “watchmen.” Frustrated with their only histories recorded by Bards with oral traditions who embellished for entertainment, watchers in contrast vowed to record events as dispassionately and accurately as possible.
The order spread across Arda, a far reaching organizational structure hidden behind an apparently loose network of traveling scribes and solitary sages. For those with nothing to hide, the wrist mark of a Watchman is a welcome sight. It means unaltered news of the world beyond their borders, or even within. And it means the chance of becoming part of a record that will endure for centuries; their own humble stories becoming part of a greater whole.
For those with secrets to hide, however, the Watchmen are a threatening, meddling presence. For the pen is indeed mightier than the sword for those who depend on the silence of others and the darkness of shadows.
Few, however, know of the higher levels of Watchmen. Even those at the lower levels, the vast majority of members can go their whole lives in services not realizing there is something more to the organization. They don’t know of the sects whose mark is only revealed by Faerie Fire, or the tasks they are given to fight tyranny where they can. Few know it was thanks in part to their efforts that anarchy did not rip the continent apart when the Nazgul fell, or the role they continue to play.

Watcher Organization

  • Watchmen: The most publicly known members of Watcher Organization, these are the traveling scribes that record events or verify sources for another Watchman’s work.
  • Scribes: Scribes work in stationary libraries as catalogers and researchers. Services of a Scribe can be purchased.
  • Curators: Each Watcher library or depository is run by a Curator.

These three levels are as far as all general public knows. All wear public marks on their wrist, though the Curator’s tattoo becomes a brand.
While Bards are the most common class to join the Watcher organization, all professions are welcome and all contribute to the pure collection and cataloging of events and the Roll of Time.
