Adherent

"Adherent" is the term for those who follow the authority of a paladin on a holy quest, usually one that manifests as a military campaign. Adherents swear to follow the commanding paladin's every command, "unless I am ordered to do evil." Technically, adherents are allowed to leave their commanding paladin's service at any time. However, if they refuse to obey just commands and refuse to leave their service, this is grounds for execution.
Any person may become an adherent, regardless of occupation, so long as the commanding paladin accepts their service. Low-ranking paladins will often serve as adherents of paladins of significant rank or influence, in the hopes of improving their own status. Paladins of every rank will often swear as adherent to Divine Commanders or Holy Generals.
