Al'jan
Meaning "one who controls," it is a term for the 'dominant' member of a highborn couple in Zalja.
When two property-owners wed, the one who controls the most wealth is allowed to dictate who will manage the wealth (the Al'jan) and who will be in charge of raising children (the Z'ja). Typically, and traditionally, they choose the role of Al'jan, and the Z'ja is generally seen as the subordinate role.
