Arbiter

A Zaljan administrative and servile profession. Most land-owning families of any consequences retain an arbiter. Beylans often retain two or even three, and Khans typically retain between five and ten.   An arbiter is charged with keeping scrupulous records of a family's resources, so their worth can be compared to that of other families. These records of power and influence are important when considering matters of preferment, but they are most vital during marriage negotiations, when it is determined which of the two betrothed will absorb the name, property, and honors of the other.   For this reason, significant families will often lease out their arbiters to act as a neutral third-party during marriage negotiations. These "weddlers" supervise and double-check the calculations of each family's arbiter and act as a final authority in the event of any disputes between the two.
