Montelermo

Montelermo is a city-state located on an island on the Shattered Coast. It has always been a place of knowledge, housing manuscripts and scrolls from all time periods in its great libraries. It is also the last known location of the Amatleh Teocaru, which was lost during the sacking of Montelermo during the Great Iribalt War.

Government

Montelermo is a democratic city-state. It is run by a council of 10 elected leaders. Each leader runs and represents their own district within the city, with each district having different features and responsibilities. Council members are voted in by the entire city, not just by the district they run. The council itself is responsible for the budget and spending of the city. Most major decisions are made through a popular vote of all denizens of the city. The 10 council members are as follows: Aigra Tanali (District 1, Barod), Edrianantarendro Lemuero (District 2, Westgarden), Selas Nantare (District 3, Vadé), Audrey Vermette (District 4, Northern Heights), Mariatu Hassana (District 5, Selnar Row), Othniel Beldenwick (District 6, Lower Ward), Valeria Ardevol (District 7, The Planks), Antoine Battier (District 8, East Shore), Gauthier Schaeffer (District 9, Milsenne), Sylvaine Leblanc (District 10, Capitol District).

Defences

Montelermo is a considerably well-fortified city, technically being classified as a castle city on their island. These defenses include traditional fortress defenses such as thick stone walls, wall-mounted artillery (ballista and cannons). These defenses only truly encapsulate the city of Montelermo itself

Districts

The city is split into ten districts.   Barod, the first district, is a section of the city just southwest of the center. It is a primarily mercantile area with a generous amount of housing, usually above shops for storekeepers.   Westgarden is a relatively expensive, primarily residential area that features the Gardens of Montelermo, the official Botanical Gardens of the city-state.   Vadé is one of the two central districts of the city. It contains its namesake, the Vadé Library, which is possibly the largest library in all of Ardrim. It is also the smallest district.   The Northern Heights are the northmost district, named for their placement on top of the cliffs that overlook the sea north of the city. It is a mostly residential area with some shops.   Selnar Row is one of the most magical areas of the city. It is home to a number of mages' towers and quite a few shops that sell potions and magic items, as well as arcane laboratories both private and public.   The Lower Ward is a large district in the southeast of the city. It is where most of the city's lower and middle-class residencies can be found. As such, it is primarily residential with some simple shops like grocers and general stores.   The Planks are the southernmost district. They encompass the entirety of Montelermo's industrial docks and much of its industry in general. As such it is also relatively large.   The East Shore is the primary non-industrial dock of the city. It features a large boardwalk, multiple public beaches, docks, shops, and many restaurants, taverns, and bars.   Milsenne is in the northwest of the city. It is decently large and serves as the primary home of Montelermo's military. It includes barracks, training grounds, staging yards, and the necessary workmen to build and maintain Montelermo's weapons and defenses.   The Capitol District is exactly what it sounds like. It is a small district in the very center of the city that is home to the City Hall, several government offices, and the city guard.

Points of interest

The Vadé Library is possibly the largest library in Ardrim and contains countless texts including many one-of-a-kind ancient manuscripts.

Tourism

Most tourism is centralized on the East Shore. However, the Vadé Library serves as a hotspot for scholars, archaeologists, and academics from all around the world to visit.

Architecture

The city is primarily made of limestone. This includes many of the buildings within as well as the walls of the city. The streets are usually either limestone or relatively colorful cobblestone paths. As for the actual architectural style, the best way to describe most of the city would be as mostly Palladian or Regency with some Baroque influences.

Geography

Montelermo is on the island of Montelermo. The city takes up most of the island. The northern shore consists of large white cliffs. Much of the rest of the shore is rocky, save for the eastern side where a number of beaches can be found. The center of the city is based around the small mountain that makes up the island. This causes the more central districts to be at a considerably higher elevation than the rest of the city. It also allows one to see nearly the entire city from atop the towers in the Government District or from the roof of the Vadé Library.

Climate

It has a warm, Mediterranean style climate. It receives a decent amount of rain, but not enough to make it nearly a rainforest biome.

Natural Resources

The city's natural resources include a copper mine beneath it as well as granite and limestone quarries. There is also a considerable amount of lumber in the forests to the city's northeast.
