Ek Chuaj - Black War Chief

The "Black War Chief", patron god of warriors and merchants. He was depicted carrying a bag over his shoulder. In art, he was a dark-skinned man with circles around his eyes, a scorpion tail and dangling lower lip.

Description: Ek Chuaj started as a god of warriors. Later he became the god of protecting merchants from harm and theft. Ek Chuaj is also the god of chocolate because the cacao beans are worth more than the same amount of gold coins. Merchants will have a special altar in their store or in the center of the marketplace. Merchants will also have a secret altar under the floor of their store near the entry door. This is to ward off any ill intentions and make customers less likely to steal from the merchant. A small figure of Ek Chuaj is carried by travelling merchants to ward off bandits.
