Drakarian Wyverns

The Drakarian Wyverns are an airborne force that operated as shock troops for the Drakarian Army. They recruit from the general army based upon characteristics such as strength, agility, and coordination. Wyverns use mechanical wings strapped to their back to "fly as Dragons" and launch themselves from either a high surface, such as a cliff or castle battlement or from a Wyvern Launcher. A launcher is a specialized trebuchet type device that launches a squad of Wyverns high into the air, where they can land wherever they want on the battlefield. Wyverns, as a specialized unit, do not carry any particular arms. They choose before a battle, based upon the conditions they will be facing upon landing (such as using spears for cavalry or war hammers and maces for heavier infantry) or on personal preference. This allows them to be adaptable to any situation or enemy they are against. This combined with the mobility of the Wyverns allows for quick insertion into enemy lines, as well as the fast deployment of reinforcements.   Due to the complexity and training required to use the Wyvern Wings, this technology is not available for common use in travel. Additionally, since the user needs to already be in the air to glide down, it is not much use over long distances.   A Wyvern is considered a very prestigious part of the Drakarian army. Since Wyvern's wings are designed to replicate a Dragon's wings, many see them as replicating a dragon's majestic ability of flight. Many Wyverns even join the force just for this prestige and honour.   While Wyverns are used in normal wide-scale warfare, they are typically not used in skirmishes. This is because of the organisation and manpower required to set up the Wyvern Launchers for use. Instead, Wyverns act as regular shock troops, without their usual Wings.
