Is Research Enough?

--== Start Scene: The Yggdrasil Community, Near the Library ==--   Captios, having dropped off the sap to Clemens, walks quickly in search of the spiritual leader of the community. Time is short and he needs all the time he can get to learn as much as possible for the upcoming battle. Paulo walks next to him, stoically, a comforting force in the frenzy of the village. Under a large tree, Captios finds the shaman communing with the tree itself. "Hi, sorry to interrupt. I'm Captios. We met earlier. Came here with Griff, helping the spirits with the defense...yea anyways. I hear that there is a library in this town that still exists. I'm going to need all the books you have on anything and everything. We need to see if there is anything that we can use to our benefit."   The woman spends her time sitting calmly in front of the great tree. Her hands run along the exposed roots there. Soft, shallow breathing until her eyes open to the interruption. "The library," the woman echos back, her senses coming back to her as if waking up. "You are welcome to it, it is up there," she says as a hand gestures up on the Yggradilcyte itself. One of the core buildings built alongside the trunk of the great tree. "We never did understand much of the scriptures there," she admits, "but we did well to honor the Ursa Majors by keeping those relics in good condition."   Thanking the women, Captios sprints towards the tree with a vigor he hasn't felt in a while. A chance to learn more about Astroix's people. A chance to put knowledge to good use. Reaching the building she was pointing to he stands outside the entrance waiting for Paulo to reach him. Paulo doesn't seem like the type to run for anyone. He pets Yoyo, sitting contentedly around his neck. He asks, "So what exactly should I be looking for Paulo?" as he goes to open the door.   "Answers," Paulo explains as he walks with Captios to the library. His footsteps don't hit the ground and he leaves no trace where he walks. "But coming up with the questions is something you have to do." A hand taps the book. Something about his intervention causing damage to fate.   Questions shoot through Captios' mind like missiles with no target. The library itself is quite nicely sized but nothing he cannot handle. He settles in the first question. "I want to understand more about the tree itself and this village. To start, are there defenses we may not know about? Then I want to understand more about the tree itself. Unfortunately I don't know much about these trees and I want to understand why everyone wants it so bad. What do the dragons get from having access to the tree?"   There are many books in the library concering what this tree is. A Yggdrasilcyte is a cutting from a great World Tree that is native to the Feywild. It connects natural life together and is woven into the rich soil and magical flora that blankets Arhor'ha. They are strong wells of life that sustain living things. Druids gravitate towards them as a noble cause to defend them against harm, although there are more Yddrasilcytes that surviving druidic circles amongst the land so the trees often defend themselves. Arhor'ha must have dozens hidden among the forest and connect to one another via roots.   All trees have a degree of natural shrouding that make them hard to find. As the trees grow and this becomes more difficult, they create nodes of life energy that protect it against hostile forces.   A Yggdrasilcyte is a coveted natural wonder. Its wood is as hard as steel. Bark is both like scales and yet can be burned as incense. Its a tree that produces both nuts and fruit, which have strong healing properties along with its sap. A tree that is converted to poison or corrupt would have perverse, malicious consequences. One such tree exists in eastern Arhor'ha and remains as a reminder to respect the savage feylike beauty of the wilderness. Meanwhile if something more primal, such as a Dragon, were to drain a Yggdrasilcyte, it would become significantly stronger. It is a vile, life taking act that only a chromatic dragon would consider and under great retaliation from celestial intervention that deters most from the gamble. The village has a cache of weapons and armor within the Great Tree itself. It has a library full of scrolls and books. Wands and staves.   The nodes work offensively and defensively, alternating their pulses between healing the natural defenders and assaulting invaders. Rituals exist to draw out spirits of trees and beasts for the most dire of situations.   Captios look up at Paulo. "There is so much here to discover. So much knowledge to obtain. But first we have to start with magic, scrolls, tools we can harness in our fight. I wonder if there are any spell scrolls in here that might be more useful than they seem. We'll look for wands later, but it's good to know. I am curious about the spirits in the trees. Let's look for anything that might example the rituals themselves we can use if we need to." BucklandYesterday at 1:44 PM The books that provide the knowledge don't talk back, per say, but they do appreciate the enthusiasm.   The books that are read and researched about the rituals show how to conduct them. It takes a day to set up the ritual itself to evoke the tree, but the spirits will only come when the need is that dire. The process is not that different than conjuring earth elementals, only these tend to be fey spirits instead of elementals themselves.   Captios, after much reading looks confused at Paulo, "Am I missing something here? I feel like these aren't the questions I should be answering. We've found wands, staffs and scrolls. I've found all the magic I could want that already exists out there. But I still don't feel like I know anything. All this information is about the bear tribe, and I'm not sure what there is to learn about them that would be helpful in this situation." Captios queries Paulo, "Do you think there are any references to Astroix in these books?" Captios begins to pull books off the shelves, searching for Astroix's name."   Paulo doesn't provide a response. He walks around the library and takes his time to restore damaged tomes where he finds them. Finding answers and researching is the strength that Captios must learn. Asking him to do it for him is cheating.
