The Curlew

In the southern part of the world in the vast sea lies an island country called Shamic Atoll. This country has four large islands that make a circle around several smaller islands. The main mode of transportation around and between the islands is by water. For the longest time there has been only three types of ships. Really big ships that take at least ten to command and having one that was a magic user. These ships did the bulk of shipping goods and people around the islands. The second type of ship has been a small personal ship. One that could only carry either people and a small amount of goods or just goods. These ships also took at least three people to man them one having to be a magic user. The last type is more of a personal boat that could carry very little and was used just to get a few people around short distances. Now two years ago a new boat was introduced called the Curlew. This new ship could be maned by only two people, nether had to have magic. The Curlew was able to carry large amount of cargo or people or a mix of the two.
The introduction of the Curlew caused some trouble. The first trouble was as many shipping companies switched to the Curlew there was a growing fear of many crew members being fired. Next there was the fear that the ships were not safe, because of the lack of crew and magic. To help ease people’s minds the shipping companies did a few things. One the shipping companies kept the larger crews for a while. This helped relax the populace’s fear but also keep workers. Second the companies that focused on just travel found that they could increase their offering and location drop offs, by having the smaller crews. This also brought up that many crew members a chance to man their own ship whereas before this was a limited chance. There is still continuing skeptics who don’t think the new Curlew is a good, sound, ship or way to do things. Many of these come from the old retired crew members and older generation.
