Burning the Wood

Raimund Abney, the final apprentice to Vaughn Skylar, decided that Wizards were more intelligent, more powerful, and all around better than everyone else. He incited a group of like-minded individuals into action, deciding that the place to begin their crusade would be the Woods of Gigentia, the homeland of the Rangers.   During this time of peace, no one expected an attack, so the Rangers were off hunting or relaxing when the group arrived. Raimund studied some bits of history about the Woods, but he didn't know much about finding his way around them (nor did his compatriots), so they wandered around for a bit, looking for the sacred sections of the Woods before giving up and deciding to burn down whatever area it was they found themselves in.   They threw fireball after fireball, sending waves and walls of fire roaring through the trees, scorching the ground and turning the trees to ash. The fires were so intense, so all-encompassing that the Wizards were able to stand there for hours, shielded by their Abjurative magic and resting periodically so they could do it again and again. When they decided they'd left the message of their intentions, Raimund and his crew teleported back to their strongholds, continuing to make plans for the war that was sure to come.   After this event, many Wizards were still hesitant to join their fellow arcane masters in their efforts, and some even defected, trying to help the Rangers rectify the horrible thing that Raimund had done. The damage was already done, however. The Rangers refused the helping hand of those Wizards, believing it a trap to cause even more damage. Some of the more brash Rangers even attempted to imprison the Wizards who came, leading them to escape and return to Raimund, deciding to help him in his cause because of the disrespect and even violence that met them with the Rangers.   A few Wizards were still intent to oppose Raimund, and so went to the Fighters who, as a whole, more thoughtful and intentional than Rangers. The Fighters accepted their help, and those Wizards were able to help prepare the Martials for the next battle, both by bolstering their numbers, and by training many in the art of the arcane, leading to Eldritch Knights becoming the most prestigious group of warriors, able to, at full strength, stop Wizards from casting their most powerful spells.

The Conflict

Outcome

This act of agression was the start of a war that would last a century, lead to countless deaths, and also countless innovations in both technology and magic.   While Martials were fairly open-minded, this also created to an intense and immediate distrust of Wizards in Rangers and Druids. Some Wizards would have joined their cause, putting a quick end to the ideas of Raimund Abney. However, the prejudice this created led to most of those Wizards to turn back on that idea and return to Raimund, allowing him to have the numbers necessary to continue his crusade.

Aftermath

To this day, some Rangers hate Wizards with every ounce of their being, generations of hatred building upon the last. Most people have, though, understand that the world's current Wizards were not the ones to commit this heinous act, and so have no ill will towards them. Many are still wary of Wizards, however, continously on guard around them, prepared to defend themselves if necessary.   The southwestern Woods of Gigentia have long since recovered from the fires of this year, due in no small part to the Druids' efforts after the War to pump magic into the area and allow the trees to regrow quickly. However, it is clear to anyone who has knowledge of nature exactly which area of this forest was affected by this tragedy, as the trees here are darker, smaller, and less welcoming than those elsewhere in the Woods.

Historical Significance

Legacy

This action completely tarnished Raimund Abney's legacy. He was a talented Wizard, and created quite a few useful spells and objects, but, after the war, his name was stripped from history. The only thing he is now remembered for is starting the Century's War. His descendants have even changed their surname so as to not be connected with him.
