Mythril (ˈmi-thril)

The odd colour made it apparent to anyone who saw it, weightless armor, his mastery lied in his agility.

Mithral is a very rare, glistening metal that is lighter than steel but just as hard.   Weapons, ammunition, armor, and other equipment made from mythril are always of masterwork quality.   Weapons Mythril's lightness adjusts how one can use many weapons, though this is not always in the wielder's favour. Melee weapons made of mythril be finessed. However, weapons from the axe, hammer, monk, siege engine, and flail weapon groups receive a -2 penalty to weapon damage dealt.   Armor When worked like steel, it becomes a wonderful material from which to create armor, and is occasionally used for other items as well. Most mythril armors are one category lighter than normal for purposes of movement and other limitations. Heavy armors are treated as medium, and medium armors are treated as light, but light armors are still treated as light. This decrease does not apply to proficiency in wearing the armor. A character wearing mythril full plate must be proficient in wearing heavy armor to avoid adding the armor’s check penalty to all his attack rolls and skill checks that involve moving. Spell failure chances for armors and shields made from mythrill are decreased by 10%, maximum Dexterity bonuses are increased by 2, and armor check penalties are decreased by 3 (to a minimum of 0).   Items not primarily of metal are not meaningfully affected by being partially made of mythril. (A mythril longsword weighs half as much and can be finessed, while a quarterstaff does not and cannot be finessed.)

Properties

Material Characteristics

A metal that commonly forms in odd patterns with a blueish green hue, mythril often forms pointing up in clusters that makes it resemble an oddly coloured pine-cone.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Mythril's most famous property is it's incredible lightness, being nearly half the weight of steel despite being stronger, the material is commonly used by those seeking better mobility in armor, to the point it can commonly be considered almost weightless. However, less known is mythril's natural non-stick properties, making it an amazing material for kitchen utensils, though such expenditures are almost decadent. Mythril is also notably magnetic, though such problems this causes don't arise often.

Geology & Geography

Mythril is often found deep below mountains, making it not uncommon to see veins while walking the dwarven underways throughout the world. Most travelers will often take whatever methods possible to acquire it when found if they realize what it is.   Most often, mythril forms from the ground up like stalagmites, often forming an cluster reminiscent of dragon scales, though more affectionately referred to as pine cones. This cluster is often able to be mined at the base, allowing large clean chunks of mythril to be acquired without much hardship when the material is found.

Distribution

Trade & Market

While not too particularly rare, the fact that mythril serves mundane uses at high prices, commonly results in mythril being considered a luxury only afforded by nobles and the rich, who will commonly throttle mythril trade routes for nearly anything commonly both for tools of their servants as well as ceremonial attire, in order to help fake personal strength by the ease of use the armor and weapons they use in such occasions. This has led to the metal sometimes considered "Oxley Platinum" in metropolitan countries such as hussalia or dergeria due to its perception as a material of vices.
