Tribal Confederation of Maoqui (Maa-Oh-Kee)

On vast plains and great lakes of Nakolota, stretching from it's eastern shore, passing through the Red Desert and ending in it's western shore, the Maoqui, a confederation of nakolotan tribes, live.   The Maoqui are simple people but lethal in times of war, cordial in times of peace but sadistic on the battlefield. Maoqui warriors are infamous for scalping defeated enemies and cutting off their enemies' ears, balming them and making necklaces of them. They rarely take prisoners, keeping alive only generals or someone of great status.   These are usually skilled with the bow, the axe, the spear and the club. But their weapon of choice is the axe, masters of both melee but also of throwing it at considerable distances. Due to the large extension of territory that is Nakolota, these tribes got used to wearing light armor, so as not to deprive them of mobility, but also to allow them to deploy quicker ambushes.   The tribes are among the most numerous peoples in Arthan Uthyl, but they refuse to leave the lands where their ancestors set up camp.   Maoqui society usually consists of a large tribe ruled by an elder, the Hataali, who is the shaman and healer of the tribe. His right hand man is usually the Bi-keh-he, the war chief, responsible for hunting and battle. While it is uncommon for outside factions to sign treaties or agreements with these people, among themselves, they enjoy an effective trading network.   The various tribes meet monthly to discuss military and political matters. Internal quarrels, threats from abroad and exploitation of resources are some of the issues put on the table at these meetings. This tribal assembly has no fixed place but always takes place on the full moon of each month.   Their society has an animist religion. For them, animals are viewed with respect, both when hunting and raising them. Acording to their religion, the spirits of these animals guide the tribes to epic feats with each tribe having an animal totem, working as patron god that they worship.   The most proeminent tribes are the Khangi and the Tatanka. The Wanbli Tribe is seen as the most hospitable and welcoming to foreigners, the Matho Tribe is the fiercest in combat, while the Zuzeca Tribe is the most furtive and the Manitu Tribe is the most hostile.   Each tribe has its own habits and traditions, with each tribe, for example, having its own war paint colors.   The Maoqui society spend a large part of their daily lives tending to their land. Nuts and fruits such as apples, plums and papayas are abundant in the region and frequent in their diet.   The bison is the most sought after animal by them, with their fur being of great use for the winter. As they are large animals, their meat feeds many and their bones are tough and seen as an asset for the creation of utensils. The buffalo, which is herded by some tribes, is widely used for plowing the land and for food.   These people are very competitive. young people from each tribe usually compete with each other to hunt, and whoever brings home the biggest game is the most respected. However, this competition is sometimes carried out in a less healthy way, with skirmishes between the different tribes being common.   The Maoqui pass down their traditions and beliefs orally, emphasizing the importance of the shaman in their society, thus, most of them are illiterate.   Due to their tribal society and many similarities, they maintain good relations and trade with the Tatamaks. While they respect the Borigua for their tuning for the elements.   A maoqui is between 1.60m and 2.00m tall, has bronze skin, dark hair, mostly black, and unique hairstyles, such as shaved hair on the sides, dark or greenish and slanted eyes. These always carry their personal axe, the tomahawk, which they use to hunt, fight, cut wood, and more, and often wear feathers braided to their hair or a scalp of an animal on top of their heads.

Main Hub

Red Rock

While the confederation doesn't have a capital, with most tribes working independently, their most sacred place is a sanctuary in the Red Desert named Red Rock. This settlement was built on the walls of a mountain and has grown into a respectable size.   Arriving in Red Rock is no easy task. Built midway in to the red mountain's peak, only way up is through several stairs, that might challenge some. upon arrival, the wide hole that was carved in the mountain allows the settlement to have a clear view of it's surroundings, with several sandstone walls and watchtowers built on the edge of it.   Most building are made from the sandstone, extracted from the mountain itself, and, for a tribal society, Red Rock has a good notion of urban planning and development. Water is extracted from the underground river, with several wells serving the city.   Nobody understands why Red Rock is such an important site to the Maoqui. Some say the settlement is a testament of time, of an era where the Maoqui were more civilized, while other scholars dispute that Red Rock might actually be the next step in the Maoqui Society.
