Koschei the Undying
Scholars of the occult mysteries of the cosmos tell the legend of Koschei the Undying, the Enemy of Death. Koschei was once a being from the material world, a legendary and formidable archmage who commanded the masses. But Koschei's body grew older, and in spite of all his mortal power he was taunted by death: some day his kingdom would be lost, and his memory would fade from the world.
Koschei dug deeper into the inscrutable mysteries of the cosmos, tugging on the strings of life and death in an effort to defy death. It is said that Koschei committed horrific acts, but the dark necromantic rituals he uncovered allowed him to evade death forever: trapping his soul in a material object so that the death of his body would not kill him.
His power and confidence only grew as he evaded death, but the decay of his body continued. The mundane around him began to refer to him as "Licwilach"–"The Living Corpse" in the old tongue–a title which he bore with pride. As the language evolved in the eras since, Koschei became known as a "lich", perhaps the first.
It is said that the secrets of these rituals are described in his ancient tome, the Grimoire of Koschei. Some say this book was recovered by the wizard Donnie Julias, but it hasn't been recovered since Julias's death.
