New Stockholm

New Stockholm is a space station in geosynchronous orbit over the ruins of Stockholm, Sweden. Although not the first, it is the largest of the orbital stations orbiting Earth, boasting a population of 100,000 people. In addition, it serves as the capital seat of the Terran Ascendency. Although in recent years, the government as a whole have not met on the station, it still serves its function as the centralized government center.
New Stockholm was built and completed 150 years after the founding of the Ascendency. At the time, it consisted of a single shuttle dock with five levels housing the meeting space for the High Council as well as support staff. Over the years since it's launch, additional components and sections were added on to the station resulting in multiple ship docks, levels, and accommodations.
In 426, an accident occurred on the station causing a general evacuation as the reactor core began to go critical. Unfortunately, the entire High Council was in session at the time and was cut off from being able to evacuate. With little time to spare, Captain Alexis Walsh rushed in and was able to rescue both the High Council and the station itself.
Since the accident, life aboard New Stockholm has slowly returned to normal, if not as busy as it had been previously. The High Council still uses the station to decide the course of the Ascendency, but not all members are physically present in the case of another accident on the station.
New Stockholm has also been instrumental in Project Vanguard as a platform for the workers to return to after their labors. Most of the population aboard the station currently is temporary until the completion of all six of the Vanguard fleets. It is believed with the completion of Project Vanguard, the stations population will drop to at most 10,000, but regardless, it will still remain a tactical and emblematic symbol of the Terran Ascendency.
