Bastion Pass
Spanning a stretch of land between the eastern coast and the southeast region of the Barren Wastes, the mercenaries and monster hunters (colloquially shortened to just "Hunters") of the Kuna Bastion serve and oversee a smaller series of towns and villages that have come to take residence there, monster attacks be damned. A resilient and stubborn folk, the people of Kuna Pass have learned to adapt to even the most dangerous of predators, and- to an extent- they have come to base their livelihoods on it.
The Youngest Faction
The city now known as the Kuna Bastion was founded in 5712 by a small group of trained Dhulwinite soldiers working in tandem with a local tribe of Loxodon, known as the Kuna. In their language, Kuna was a word that translated to either hero or fool depending on the inflection and context. It had been known for a great long time that monsters of the Wastes tended to make their way into this area, avoiding the ruins of civilizations prior as well as the Parch to the west. This did not deter either group, and with enough time, determination, and blood they were able to establish a stronghold within the Wastes that blocked the largest hotbed for monster incursion. From there, the stronghold slowly grew as brave merchants would come to trade highly sought-after monster parts for small mountains of coin. Settlers hoping to capitalize on this trade established towns and made roads along the foot-paths the merchants took until eventually the region had established its own identity of fighting and harvesting monster parts.A City of Lineage
Many of the Dhulwinite soldiers have etched their name in the legend of Kuna Bastion and started family lines that have sought to honor the strength and bravery of their forefathers. These families would serve to become the closest thing to nobility within the Bastion Pass, establishing great estates within the city as well as claiming ownership over various parts of the larger Pass by building impressive keeps and strongholds. While each family watches over their respective land differently, almost all of them rule with a fairly light hand, more interested in gathering small tariffs and taxes than attempting to hold absolute rule over the villages. Within the city itself, most looking to find work as Hunters have to join one of the various guilds established by one or more of the families. While there is some work that is posted publicly, most of the jobs that are found in the Bastion are assigned through family Patrons to those they have sponsored. Getting a good sponsorship with a well-established house is not just a sign of affluence, but of the quality of one's abilities as a Hunter.Dirty Deeds and Deals
Given the loose authority the families hold over the region, in addition to the less-scrupulous actions that mercenary work can entail, the Bastion has become a quiet sanctuary for those on the wrong side of the law. Rumors of certain families carrying out assassinations, the buying and selling of dangerous and illegal materials, and many other seedy acts carried out in quiet street corners have all furthered the rugged and dangerous reputation of Kuna Bastion. That said, the region still remains on mostly good terms with the Confederation, and in the few occasions a battle has broken out in Ilkatu, it was typical to see house flags being flown alongside that of the Confederation's.We Solve Problems
