Vulture

Marju Rigan, better known as Vulture, was a tiefling sailor, captain, smuggler, and pirate. They were known as a ruthless and business-minded person in the early era of expansion and trade between the Brights and the Gloom. Rigan was active around the Skailes and Inner Sea, and was best known as the captain of the ship Stalwart, which was a warship they captured from the Warkan navy around 3560. Rigan likely had prior sailing experience before capturing and captaining Stalwart, but this is not well recorded.   As a pirate captain, Rigan drew the ire of several governments and organizations for their violent tactics and high volume of theft and plundering. Rigan and their crew were one of the most prolific groups of pirates in history, with estimates of the total value of their looting reaching well over 1 million gold.   In the modern day, they have been widely fictionalized as a folkloric figure. As a result, outside of academic circles the veracity of most information about Rigan is disputed, and many popular claims about them are not accepted by historians.

Early life

Little is known about Rigan's early life. A few documents likely to have been written by Rigan themself give a general picture. Rigan was born around 3540 AR, and was a member of an educated family with a background in seafaring. They learned to read, write, and sail at a young age, and one journal claims they wanted to be a sailor since childhood.   Rigan's own accounts are intentionally vague as to where they grew up, but demographic data from the time and cultural details in their writing make it likely that they were born in the Gloom, coming from either Threshold or the Verges.

Death

Rigan died in 3581 while attempting to sail through Kazja's Eye. Documents from the time suggest that Rigan claimed to be attempting the feat for personal reasons of seeking glory, but was likely politically motivated. By the late 3570s, efforts to capture Rigan were becoming more frequent and more likely to succeed, and a coalition formed to capture them shortly before they left for the Eye. Rigan and their crew were last seen in Washwither, where several crew members left the expedition. They were never heard from again, and several years later the masthead of Stalwart was discovered in the waters near Washwither, suggesting the ship sank not far from the city.

Vulture's Nest

Historical records and urban legends surrounding the fate of the Rigan's treasure are vague and often conflict each other. Rigan may have kept a cache of treasure somewhere, and many have sought it out since. Concrete evidence of where this "Vulture's Nest" may be located is lacking. Some historians believe no such cache of treasure has ever existed, citing Rigan's documented lavish spending habits. If the Nest did exist, some historians maintain that its most likely location was within the hold of Stalwart, and that it sunk with the ship within Kazja's Eye.
