Fergolla Dunlae

The Hound of Madness Fergolla Dunlae (a.k.a. The Dog)

I wasn't always like this. I was respected. I was going to be a father. At least I think I was. Now they call me a dog, mean't to be kept on a leash. I can't control it, I see people, hear voices, they're not there. I know they're not there, but it always seems so real. Sometimes I have to question what IS real. I keep waking up with new burn marks. I can't help it. I have trouble remembering sometimes. People, face's particularly, the only person who I can seem to remember consistently is Caldwell. He has been my totem through all of this. He cares for me, protects me from myself, or at least, who I become. I black out, I don't know what happens when I do, but when I awake there are only two outcomes. Either I'm with Caldwell, or people are dead. I fear for what I am my friend, I fear for the future, I fear the drums that I can hear now on the horizon, The beating, The tremor of my Northman Clan, marching over the horizon. I see it my friend, the fire, it grows bright, I see it the people who watch and smile inside the flames. I hear the hounds of madness growling from the dark. A pack of wolves in the night eyes alight like ember. It looks to me, with a low and mocking growl. It peers at me, loves and hates me. It plagues my nights and invades my dreams, or maybe it's real and this is the dream. I cannot awake... I cannot... I... I....   The man sits next to Fergolla with a scared and confused expression painted across his face.   "Ferg are you OK?" asks Caldwell approaching him from the forest, a few rabbits in hand.   Fergolla looks back to fire, dim and crackling.   I'm fine. Just talking to myself.

Personal history

As a child he grew up among the Northmen of Clan Loganoch . Life in the rolling, forested hills of the Loganoch Highlands is simple and violent. While Loganoch mothers raise their children with kindness and compassion, Loganoch clansmen instill values of assertion, aggression, and knowledge through pain as the principle doctrine for their children. The Loganoch are rugged, tough, and wise — many children raised in the settlements bring home their first aurochs trophy before they show any signs of adulthood.   The motions and behavior of the Loganoch hinge on the decree of their Council of Four, a group of druidic elders in the clan who serve as de facto leaders of the Loganoch. In times of peace, they assist in the placement and reaping of crops and the selection of game, and in times of war, they guide in strategy and always urge for peace negotiations.   While not holding any natural proclivity for battle, the Loganoch are fearsome warriors. Their brutality and cunning makes them fearsome opponents, and while their numbers outside of the Timberlands are limited, they are among the most sought-after hired muscle in Ilucin.   During this time, he quickly realized that he was smarter than his brother and sisters, excelling mostly in hand to hand combat and more importantly the art of magic. A druid circle taught him the basics of magic and upon his 18th birthday, he was given special permissions by his elders to travel and learn about the world, bringing back with him new knowledge and ideas. It was on these travels that he studied and learned the art of magic.   He quickly abandoned his combat rituals and practices for that of the written word. Traversing city to city, land to land, learning of new and fantastic magics. It was soon thereafter that he had become well known among the magic community as one of the best and most proficient masters of evocation, even teaching classes at the age of 27 at Ridweth , a widely known college and sanctuary for those gifted in the arcane arts.   This was all abandoned when he encountered a man by the name of Caldwell Fleetstone . Caldwell was in search of compatriots. His goal was a noble one and quite frankly one that Fergolla agreed with wholeheartedly. Secure magic items liberating them from the hands of the wealthy who could afford them and giving them to the poor and downtrodden. They went on to form the Gemini Initiative. A collection of the world's most powerful Wizards, one from each school. It was on one fateful day that everything came crashing down for DunLae.   Assisting Caldwell personally in the acquisition of a rare and valuable artifact, they spent time digging in the lands of the Brisit Wastes. No one knew what the artifact was, but it was told to hold great power. It was on a hot day that they regretfully found what they were looking for. An urn was unearthed; runes carved along the wax seal that kept the lid from being opened. Fergolla peered inside and what he saw drove him insane.
