Session 10: 10/08/2024
General Summary
Asterlynn 26th late afternoon, until the morning of the 27th of Quildarynn in the year 333 AI
Our heroes are looking out over a wide cavern. A drow is supervising three bugbears, one standing guard and two down in a chasm below where the others are clearing out some rubble. Whispering in between the booming sound of the waves, a plan is forged. While Numot takes on the guise of the drow, Resnalore readies a spell. Boldly Numot steps out into the cavern and approaches the bugbear on guard. Resnaklore tries to immobilise the real drow, but unfortunately it fails! The drow manages to alarm the guard, battle ensues.
Nevertheless, the battle favours our friends, as the surprised guard is so befuddled he drops his morningstar, which collides head on with a bugbear that was about to climb up! The raging Gundren is flailing about with his axe, while ankles are being nipped at by Aphrodite. It isn't long before the heroes prevail and start investigating the cavern. The drow they managed to keep alive, or should I say, what was he drow. Turns out it was a Doppelganger.
Numot is the interrogator of service. Vhalak soon finds cooperation is best, as Numot sees through his lies, even if Resnalore is of a gentler mind. Thus, the learn for the first time the real of The Black Spider: Nezznar. Who turns out to be a real Drow.
Little else is learned from Vhalak, however, who knows how much he truly is cooperating. The crew sets out to find out what else the cavern has to offer. They stuff Vhalak away somewhere and check it out. With a group effort a dwarven skeleton is discovered, wearing Gauntlets of Ogre Power. These are quickly added to Resnalore's equipment. The party now has an idea of what they are up against and sets forth. Into the hallway in direction of the temple they proceed, trying to be as stealthy as they can. In vain, as Nezznar had sent his Giant spiders ahead. A mere hindrance for our fearless friends.
They end up in front of a closed door, that proves no match for Numot's sleight of hand. In the provional cell, in long ere days the priest's quarters, they find Nundro alive and well! Although outraged by the treatment and the loss of his brother. A sip of ale helps him regain composure, and remember his poor stolen axe. This axe was taken upon his capture, and somehow, believe it or not, it turns out to be the same axe our party retrieved from one of the mimics! Whoever was transporting it must have fallen to the mimic... Pleased Nundro is ready to split some skulls and follow our party and end this ordeal. Numot, in disguise still, sets out to lay a trap...
Again stealth fails him, as a bugbear marches into the hall, right when they meet Numot's disguise drops. A roar of surprise alarms the temple and the cell that battle has commenced! However, a well laid bottleneck makes short work of the last two bugbears... Now the remaining foe needs care, the drow wizard. They hear him mummble something and proceed with care... Seems Nezznar gravely underestimated the danger. For shortly he lies dead on the floor and is relieved of his possessions. So it is their enemy lies defeated, they start exploring the cavern and find some funny looking strips of paper. With some quick deductions they manage to decode these Documents.
It seems Nezznar himself was just a middle man for some people up North. He seemed to believe he was working for Lolth, the Spider Queen herself, but given what is known to our friends this seems rather unlikely. This whole scheme seems far to elaborate to have a mere, male servant take up its leadership... The documents offer more questions than answers... While the yponder this, the statue of Dumathoin caught some attention, mostly its eyes. Although they supposedly are fake and made of glass, as proffered by one of the dwarves, Liberty still wants a closer look. Even the aura of abjuration magic can't stop him. Soon one of the eyes is pried out of its sockets...
... and the ceilling caves in! It is with the greatest dexterity that the party manages to evade being crushed to death. However, it is now a dusty group and whatever secrets were left in the desk remain buried. Curiosity killed the cat as they say! Nevertheless it is an optimistic party that decides to take a rest for the night, before continuing the mapping of Wave Echo Cave. Goodnight warriors!
