Session 4: 30/09/2023
General Summary
Before they could take a breather, the door to the jailcells opened, Daran's warcry had drawn some attention. Two Redbrands had been guarding the prisoners, unfortunately for them Daran was swift and had them under attack straight away. The Nothic was next and he was so pissed that the Stooges had no meat that one of the Redbrands got eaten alive! The prisoners were free! Mirna Dendrar, wife of the dead woodworker, and her children Nilsaand Narswere soon freed from their cells. In gratitude Mirna mentioned that she had no real money to offer as thanks and payment, but that she did leave an heirloom behind in Thundertree when they fled the undead menace. It could be found somewhere beneath the floor of the herb and alchemy shop. The name of Thundertree rang a bell with the party, in their minds they could hear the voice of Qelline Alderleaf:
"I'm a longtime friend of a druid named Reidoth. He might know where Cragmaw Castle and Wave Echo Cave are since there’s not an inch of the land he doesn’t know. He recently set out for the ruins of a town called Thundertree, just west of the Neverwinter Wood. The ruins are about fifty miles northwest of Phandalin."
Turning back to the present, the party leads the family out to the forest from where they can safely return home. Now it's time to find Glasstaf and deal with the Redbrand issue once and for all. They return yto the common room, where they heard voices before and device a plan. Sneaking a peak they find 5 ruffians playing Knucklebones. Liberty sets out to the other door to create a distraction. Then Resnalore quietly starts to close the door, but ends up locking it with a bang! Given the nature and age of the door it gives way under the assault of the Ruffians all too fast... Another battle ensues. Daran's warcry and steel rings out again, swords slash in all directions, but the most gruesome again is the Nothic. His claws manage to tear of a Rebrands head... in front of Resnalore he starts to munch on the guy's brains... As she sees this, her lunch decides to make a reappearance... and who can blame her... Ever the gentleman the Nothic even offers up some of his dinner. Which hadn't an optimal effect.
The attention now turns to the Wizard's quarters. Upon opening the door they notice a rat staring at them in interest. The moment Resnalore tries to catch it however it disappears. Nothing more than a familiar summoned by Glasstaff, who has apparently been warned by his rat that there was a commotion going on and who has hit the road. Looking through the wizard's quarters Stone Head figures out that he was working, unsuccessfully, on an invisibility potion. Moreover there is a tome on the workbench. The journal of an adventurer named Urmon, it describes the history of the Lost Mine of Phandelver and the Forge of Spells. In addition, Urmon records that a magic mace named Lightbringer was commissioned by priests of Lathander, the god of dawn, from the mages working with the gnomes and dwarves of the Phandelver’s Pact. The mace was lost when Wave Echo Cave and its mine vanished from history.
Liberty meanwhile tries to find out where Glasstaff went and looks around the bedroom, he finds a letterwritten by the black spider as well as a hidden door leading to the cave the party just came from. Finding tracks most of the party sets out to catch the wizard, who turned out to be no one else than Iarno Albrek. Once a member of the Lord's Alliance and exactly the one Sildar was looking into as he suddenly disappeared two months ago. They corner him when he exits the Sleeping Giant Taphouse, where he hoped to find reinforcements. Liberty makes short work of him, one spell later he's asleep and tied up. After dragging him to Daran's apple orchard, Sildar and the party question him, under heavy threat, they find out:
- The Black Spider is a drow (dark elf).
A swift stroke of the blade later, they have a dead wizard on their hands. The town is informed that the Redbrands are taken care of. In gratitude the party is given the deed to Tresendar Manor. They now have a home in Phandalin. One of the villagers also noticed the Owner of the taphouse fleeing as soon as the party took care of the wizard. Seeing that the woodworkers family needed an income, the party (after also receiving the taphouse as thanks) decides to offer it to the Dendrar's. Mirna however, only accepts after some heavy negotiations. In the end, she only accepts to keep the taphouse's profits after it is decided that in return she will also manage the Manor when the party is absent.
The party then sets out back to the manor for some rest and dinner, after warning the villagers that they better stay away from the tunnel and cellar of the Manor. As they now have a Nothic for a pet. The Nothic meanwhile had eaten everything left in the cellar, while Halia had rummaged through the documents and taken them (as per the agreement). After a short discussion the Nothic agrees to not eat people and only hunt for animals, along with food offered by the party. However, anyone that entered the cellar uninvited, without a member of our fearsome threesome, is fair game for dinner. To protect the villagers from harm and our party from a lawsuit, Liberty puts out clear signs in the tunnel and around all entrances to the cellar to warn intruders.
The party then enters the manor to start some dinner and find a place to slee. Liberty, ever the matchmaker even goes out of her way to invite Pip over. His mother gives him three hours before he needs to be home. Soon Pip and Resnalore share each others company and afgter practically falling into her arms, Pip hangs on her every word as she regales him with their adventures in the cellar. Before leaving Pip tries to gather some courage but fails, Resnalore however notices something is up and, being no idiot, leans in. As in every good story this one ends with a kiss!
