Drovinu Pericalinus

DROW OF DROVINU PERICALINUS

Thousands of years ago many elves of Asterra sheltered themselves deep within the caverns of the earth, far away from the horrors that made up the the Green Sea. They soon found that horror also lurked beneath the ground. Creatures and beings that no mortals were meant to meet. Some Drow still speak of the night they begged the Patrons for mercy, a decision that would perhaps corrupt their flesh eternally.   When their numbers dwindled to nary a few dozen, their prayers were answered. In but a moment, a disgusting malformed creature appeared before them, burning their skin the color of charcoal and ink, bleaching their eyes so that even their pupils could not be seen, and gifting them with an inherent natural talent for black magic. The Elves of the underground were transformed forever.   Their children would carry this curse for eternity. They would not look back on this cursed day as the day they were corrupted, but the day that they were enlightened and blessed. With their newfound talents and abilities, they grew to rule over the creatures of the deep, and eventually made their way back to the surface, where they would begin shepherding the other races into a new age, the age of Drow. So vain were they in their belief of almighty dominance that they began actively changing the surface landscape from hills of verdant green to cliffs and forests of azure blue.

Customs and Traditions

Although not inherently evil Drow are taught to be ruthless and to understand how other beings think and to manipulate them. Contrary to the belief of many, however, Drow believe that this is necessary to ensure the survival of all other races, as they believe themselves the most powerful and capable of all other mortal beings. Interspecies mingling is seen as one of the most heinous crimes a mortal can commit. Expulsion and banishment is not a suitable punishment for those who dabble in affairs with other races. Many Drow who do so are collared, their magical talents contained and then made a slave. The child of such a pairing is sacrificed to Akatosh, in hopes that the wanderer will have mercy on the soul of the impure creature.   The Drow hold a ritual once every decade to honor the Patron who saved them from extinction and gave them the power they needed to conquer the underground. Any children born this year under their rule, are sacrificed in a divine fire, so as to honor the deity. Though there are many legends of other Elven infants becoming Drow through this ritual, there are no records accounting such events ever happening. Upon reaching age 20, a Drow is considered and Adult, however the Drow does not truly look fully mature until age 100.

Marriage

Drow see marriage as a tool, rather than a sign of love. Drow are commonly married into other Drow families to form alliances between the families, or to breed more powerful and gifted Drow. One great rule remains, however, and that is that Drow may not, under any circumstance, marry outside their race.   Drow children are often engaged the day they are born, or as soon as they begin showing their inherent magical talent at the age of 5. Marriage commences once the child reaches the age of 50, once they can properly procreate, and once the two families agree upon the terms of their newfound alliance.   While families may hold alliances, one of the greatest rules of Drow society is that under no circumstance may they wage war with another family of their race. Doing so is to wage war with the entirety of the Drovinian.
