Dubious Donjons / Mysterious Mazes / Intriguing Oubliettes

The world may be at the very least, mapped, but that by no means implies that mystery isn't still abound out there among the natural world of Astillon. Throughout the map are odd locations, each different from one another that lie in curious places. Small, and quite literal doorways into various other planes or realities, who's challenges always pre-empt a reward.

Functionality and Rules

  • Donjons will always show the reward prior to entering
  • Donjons will incorporate failed adventurers into their guardianship
  • Fallen Donjon guardians will be trapped there until defeated. When the Donjon is completed, souls of these individuals are released, and sometimes even their physical bodies.
  • If a donjon is completed with guardians still in place, those un-released guardians will typically be destroyed along with the Donjon

Nuances

  • If there is nuance to the rules of a donjon, though it uses the same type of magic, it is considered something else (Such as a random realm within the dreamscapes of creatures).
  • Not all donjons have a guardian, but if this is the case, then more often than not, a test of skill needs to be completed.
  • "Defeating a guardian" is a loose term

The Rewards

  • Rewards are based on level. The actor who creates a Donjon dictates the highest level heart item of the donjon, as well as the challenges they are allowed to populate inside of it.
  • A Donjon can have more than one reward. If the actor who creates it wishes it to have more layers to protect the heart of the donjon, they can provide other treasures of a lower level. These items dictate the max level of that particular layer
  • Special Donjons that hold artifacts are the hardest challenges to beat. These have a layer from 1 all the way up to the level of their heart, which is the artifact itself.

Types

  • Types range between them. Dubious Donjons is simply one name for a particular type of challenge. Others might call them Mysterious Mazes or Intriguing Oubliettes.
  • These Donjons obey planar rule. That is to say they can each display the same rules and jurisdictions that would be in place if one were to create a demiplane.

Locations

Known Donjons

There are a number of known Donjons in the world that are either well-documented, or well-cautioned against trying to defeat given past failings of adventurers
  • Mount Ashborne's Donjon
  • Northern Crater Donjon
  • Unusual Isle Donjon
  • Poolton Donjon

Failure

  • To fail within a Donjon's challenge means to be killed or wiped out inside of it. If it's occupants are successful in defeating the intruder, the intruder is turned into a pawn within that layer or up to a layer equal to their level.
