Player Starting Gold

Gold is a major source of strength for characters in D&D. More gold allows them to buy better weapons, armor, and magic items, to say nothing of the acquisition of castles, armies, and Organizations. A starting character begins play with a modest sum of money, based on their class. Starting gold amounts are listed in the Starting Gold table. Equipment can be purchased for market value (the value listed in source material) before play, so a character can begin as well equiped as they can afford to be.

Gold at Higher Levels

A player joining an existing group at higher level, or a party starting at a level higher than one will have more starting gold, representing the riches earned from their adventuring up to this point. the Wealth by Level table shows the starting gold for player characters higher than first level. This is not class dependent, as the starting gold of different classes is marginal relative to the wealth earned through adventuring. When purchasing equipment for a higher level character, no more than half the character's starting gold may be spent on a single item.
