Barony of Barovia
Barovia is a land marred by shadow. For centuries the land was ruled by Strahd Zarovich, last of his line, and first of the vampires. Having made a dark pact with the abyss, Strahd gained new power, but it had a price. Over time his humanity gave way, and chaos took hold of his heart. Strahd ruled Barovia with fear and manipulation of his abyssal gifts. The land was shrouded in mist, hidden from the world. Any who entered were trapped in Stahds nightmare realm, cursed to live as a puppet, or serve in undeath.
Strahd kept his realm of shadows hidden from the knowledge of men and the demi-races. When he saw fit to lift the veil and allow new blood to enter the mist, it was never his intention to invite his demise. This came to pass when an intrepid party of wary travelers found themselves surrounded by the fog and thrown into the Barovian Nightmare. The tales vary wildly, but all end the same way. After facing several trials and bitter defeats, the party of adventurers managed to work their way inside Castle Ravenloft for the third and final time. Armed with the Blade of Sunlight and the knowledge granted by the abyss, they managed to Strike Strahd down and trap him within his coffin, where after having resurrected the late Baron Von Zarovich and defeated Strahds brides they dealt the final blow.
Involuntary Reelection
Baron Von Zarovich is an interesting man, to say the least. Having been thrust back into life after being dead for centuries, his desire to right the wrongs of his late son and former ruler of Barovia is primarily what keeps him going. His rule is peaceful, and over the last 20 years he has managed to bolster the Knights of the Silver Dragon, renew trade with neighboring Kingdoms, as well as rebuild the town of Vallaki. His age, though bolstered through the revival of the abyss, begins to catch up once again. With no direct decendants, many wonder to whom Castle Ravenloft will pass and rulership of Barovia with it. Not to mention the duty of guarding Ravenlofts darker secrets…
The City of Vallaki has been on a long road of recovery since Strahd's demise. The villagers managed to overthrow those still loyal to the dark lord, and overtime have rebuilt much of what was lost during the Great fire. A statue is erected in the center of Vallaki depicting the brave adventurers who freed the people from oppression.
