Torog

The Crawling King

Torog is the evil god of The Underdark, patron of jailers and torturers in the Astorian Pantheon. Common superstition holds that if his name is spoken, the King That Crawls burrows up from below and drags the hapless speaker underground to an eternity of imprisonment and torture. Jailers and torturers pray to him in deep caves and cellars, and creatures of The Underdark revere him as well.

Torog was once a god of virility and health, renowned for his invulnerability and strength.
In the days before the War of Creation, Torog had a hated rival, a monstrous primordial named Gargash, who went deep into the earth to experiment with powers of torture and imprisonment. Affronted by the dark tidings that he heard of Gargash's experiments, Torog entered the Underdark in order to destroy his nemesis at the moment before the War of Creation broke out between the gods and the primordials. Because of this, Torog and Gargash were thus both left behind and did not participate in the War between Gods and Primordials. Instead, they fought a violent battle with each other, in which Torog finally gained the upper hand. As Gargash felt his strength disappearing, he cursed Torog to never heal from his wounds and to never be able to leave the deep places of the earth. Once his enemy had fallen, Torog set about attempting to return to the surface, but found himself unable to do so without losing all his power. His body broken and bleeding, Torog spent eons crawling his way through the deep places of the earth, carving out the seemingly endless tunnels that would become known as the Underdark. His mind broken and twisted by the pain, Torog settled himself as the god of the Underdark and torture, inspired by his torturous attempts to leave for the surface with his permanently broken body. After the War of Creation, the Benevolent gods finally found him, ruling his dominion from within the corpse of his fallen enemy Gargash. They did not like what they saw of their old friend. Torog had become an evil, twisted shadow of his former self, and the Benevolents were forced to put an end to his machinations. Torog was banished to the Far Realm, dragging his Underdark realm of Gargash with him.
When Torog appears before his followers, it is a terrifyingly gruesome sight. He appears as a massive hairless human, covered from head to toe in smoldering burns and bleeding lacerations, he drags his broken legs behind him with his huge powerful arms. Torog has fifteen bones shoved through the top of his skull, which he treats as his crown. His wounds are deeply infected and they never heal over, his eyelids and cheeks are nothing but bleeding holes set forth in his head and he always has blood in his eyes. Torog is wrapped in chains and has the blades of various immortals pierced into his body.
