Nations of Soleria

The Ortesian Empire

The sun rises across a vast horizon. Its rays break overtop mountains and wash over vast stretches of wilderness. A massive city churns to life, as worshippers fill the streets and pile into their churches. Soon, they go to work, then wave to the soldiers as they return home. As such the sunlight shows us all across this realm.
The Ortesian Empire is a powerful theocratic kingdom which wields iron-fisted control over the Southern half of the Solerian continent. Its vast lands are dotted by resplendent fields, tiny villages, dense urban centers, ancient ruins, and large pockets of untamed wilderness.
Tensions run high between the Ortesians and the Florentine Republic to the North, as the two trade rhetorical barbs and use their militaries to stake claims to contested resources and treasures. Similarly, though with much less contest, the people’s of the Free Isles to the South struggle to fight back against Ortesian colonization.

The Florentine Republic

The sunlight does little to ease the harsh winds and cold climate as it moves across open plains to light the way for weary travelers. The rays bounce off immaculate artworks and pristine armors to bring into view the many varied peoples of this realm, all of whom toil to make their living beneath the sympathetic platitudes of those who have the wealth to commission the art and armors. They speak of equality, and of fraternity, but few of their subjects will truly experience it.
The Florentine Republic is the smaller and younger of the two nations in Soleria; governed by a group of elected leaders as opposed to a single person who inherits the position of King or Emperor, they pride themselves on being more in touch with their peoples and their wants and needs. They present themselves as progressive, revolutionary, and egalitarian in their governance.   As with anything, there is more nuance to the truth. Many living within the Republic's borders lead difficult lives, waiting eagerly for the day their promised prosperity will be delivered by this radical system. Many feel it is a front to sugarcoat oligarchy to the masses. Beyond this, ongoing tensions with the Ortesian Empire to the south is stirring discontent at home, as citizens fear the possibility and subsequent repercussions of war.
