Xan Balam was rejected from the underdark for preferring his tea over more popular underdark activities, being accused of thinking he was better than the other deep gnomes. He now is searching for gainful employment and a place he can call home.

Personal history
The deep caverns beneath the veilguarded lands are barely explored, as the grounds there have intermittent connections to the lands beyond and thus are almost overrun with various corruptions and strange creatures, making it a hostile place for all, and resulting in tightly knit societies.
It is therefore rare for a creature to be ousted as group survival is impotant, but Xan Balam presented a unique situation amongst his peers in that he towered over them at nearly twice their average height, and often struggled with his interests that left him seeming exotic and queer to his fellows.
Determing their complete lack of interest in what he considered to be a great art, Xan Balam would wander amidst the underdark in the search of something more cultured. And whilst he would find underneath, his feet would eventually exit a cave entrance, his own motions setting off a landslide and crumbling the entrance, and thus cutting him off.
With no path backwards, Xan Balam would spend some time amongst these strange creatures as tall as he was, and with a precocious nature would adapt and find people interested in his strange concoctions. "Tea" they called what he had done in their overland tongue, and "Tea" he would make, eventually gaining such success and reputation that he would buy and own his own Teashop known as the "Dip your sack Tea Emporium"
from there he would provide his excellent services as a Maestro of Tea Creation, sharing his brew with others, and commonly receiving an 11 out of 10 for his services.
