Pipe-weed

Pipe-weed is the ground up budding flowers and leaves of the Westman's-weed, or the Cannabis tree. The plant is commonly found being grown and cultivated by farmers, and it grows widely around the elvish cities, by gardeners, where it is appreciated mostly for its sweet-scented flowers.

Discovery and Uses

Pipe-weed, a member of the Cannabaceae flowering plants, was first cultivated by native islanders who inhabit the tropical island chains in the Sea of Starlight. Used by the natives in ceremony, it was thrown on fires, and put in long hollow bamboo pipes for personal use by the tribes medicine man. Pirates are credited for taking seeds of the small tree like bushes, who brought them to various ports for trade.   It wasn't until c. 4866 of the First Era that the plants were grown around various elven cities in the Cormanthyr Forest and Empire. Now nearly every elven city has gardens of pipe-weed, from the capital Nila Edhil to the distant valley of the mage, and cities like Moonhollow.   Despite not being the first to smoke it, Hobbits are credited with being the first to truly understand how to cultivate the plant on a large scale. While there are many species of Cannabaceae, the Hobbits grow and trade two: Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica.

Description

Cannabis is an annual, dioecious, flowering herb. The leaves are palmately compound or digitate, with serrate leaflets. The first pair of leaves usually have a single leaflet, the number gradually increasing up to a maximum of about thirteen leaflets per leaf (usually seven or nine), depending on variety and growing conditions. At the top of a flowering plant, this number again diminishes to a single leaflet per leaf. The lower leaf pairs usually occur in an opposite leaf arrangement and the upper leaf pairs in an alternate arrangement on the main stem of a mature plant.
