Fall of Elvantor
From Regis, Imperial Archivist:
"Not much is known about the Montovians, our distant ancestors who overthrew the Eladrin empire and formed the first human republic. What we do know is mainly myth and legend, as the Montovians were far better at swinging a weapon than wielding a quill.
It is most likely true that the Eladrin ruled this continent for thousands of years, given their mastery of magic and development of amazing technologies. The Montovians, the largest human tribe on the continent, rallied the other human tribes to fight the Eladrin after hundreds of years of abuse from their fey oppressors. The war was bloody and brutal, dragging on for several decades and nearly destroying both human and fey.
It is said that the reason the Eladrin ultimately lost the war was their gods abandoning them, for their faith in magic and technology had displaced faith in their gods. As a man of history and science, I find that explanation to be underwhelming. Several history tomes, recently unearthed from the Elven archives in the bowels of the Arcanium and allegedly written by the Eladrin themselves, suggest that the humans' ability to quickly reproduce and re-populate their armies, combined with a handful of powerful Eladrin betraying their own kind, ultimately led to the destruction of Elvantor.
Why would these Eladrin betray on their own people? The sources aren't clear. We do know that after Elvantor was sacked and razed, several Eladrin were involved in the construction of the new human city, modern-day Hadrianus, which sits atop the ruins of its previous inhabitants. It has also been theorized that the Eladrain were secretly involved in the formation and construction of The Arcanium. Perhaps they were able to strike a deal with Montovians - a way to preserve the culture of their people despite total annihilation of their civilization.
While there are still plenty of elves on the continent, the Eladrin themselves have all but disappeared. Perhaps they still exist, in parts of the world we have yet to discover or fully explore. I certainly hope this is true; they are a most fascinating civilization, with much to teach us impatient humans."
