Displaced
Darien and Smithy leave Burton Weller's estate, deciding to first investigate Darmir Keenfist, the leader of the city's Peacekeepers. They head to Oldfort Plaza, the administrative center of town, but are unable to locate him. They speak with Xaroxes Oldcedar, high priest of the Everforge and a member of the city council who recognizes Smithy from his victory at the Feast of Irons. They learn that Darmir had left mere hours earlier into the Techeryan Jungle on a trade mission with the native grung population, and Darien and Smithy set out to catch up with him.
They travel along the Lumber Road into the jungle and eventually encounter Darmir's party, finding them engaged in a fight with numerous displacer beasts. They enter the fray and are able to drive off the creatures, but not before Darmir's party suffers the loss of its translator. Smithy offers his services as a translator instead after tending to the survivor's wounds, while Darien cautiously tries to interrogate Darmir without giving too much away. His conversation is ultimately fruitless, and the two elect to travel with the dwarf to the grung settlement of T'yarag Village in the morning.
Soon after heading out around sunrise, the band reaches the grung village. It quickly becomes apparent that T'yarag had recently experienced a coup, and the new leadership seems quite hostile towards the Keshite representatives. The olf Chief Woog Woog and his family are held in wooden cages in the town center, while the new chief Garbloo sits haughtily on a throne atop them. As a crowd gathers around the Keshites, Smithy attempts to negotiate a peaceful outcome but the situation rapidly escalates and several of the new chieftan's soldiers begin to push through the crowd with their weapons drawn.
